anyone with coeliacs?

posted 3rd Nov
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone else has coeliacs disease? The reason being, I got diagnosed last December. With both my pregnancies, I was absolutely exhausted ALL the time. I know that's a symptom of pregnancy, but I wonder to what extreme? I'm wondering this time around if maybe because I know about my coeliacs and am treating it with a strict gluten free diet (so I'm not tired), if maybe it won't be so bad. Anyone else had a smilar experience? Thanks in advance, Laura.

Sorry, in America it's spelled Celiacs Disease. It's when your body can't handle gluten (is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. it's what holds a loaf of bread together and stops it falling and crumbling appart). When gluten is ingested by someone with coeliacs it strips the intestines of their lining so they can't absorb nutrients and minerals etc properly. It's handled by sticking to a strict gluten-free diet.

Even spelled the American way I didn't know what it was but, thanks for the info. It's always good to learn something new.

it's actually quite common. They reckon 1 in 100 people have it, but a lot don't know it. I never had a clue!

I think I might have it but idk how to get my doctor to test for it without sounding like a hypochondriac. What are your main symptoms besides being tired all the time?

diahrea or constipation, low iron, skinny or over-weight. Ummm... trying to remember... will find a site, han on. You can ask for a blood test. If the blood test is pos, it doesn't mean that you have it, just that you have the gene for it. If that comes back pos, they stick a tube down your throat while you're asleep, and they take a tiny sample of the lining of your small intestine.

I don't have it but my mum does. She didn't know she had it until about 10 years ago, so she was eating wheat the whole time she was pregnant with me. She didn't lactate properly because of it either. Her body just wasn't getting enough fuel. You should start feeling a lot better as your digestive system repairs itself  . Expect to be tired though, that's just one of the joys of pregnancy we all share  .
Best of luck! I can ask her if you've got any specific questions, but she was never pregnant on a gluten-free diet so I can't really get a comparison for you.

thanks but that's okay. I'm really just wondering if there's a difference between being on a gluten free diet and what was before. I'll just have to wait and find out. Thanks for replying
