My son's first time for baby food... help!

posted 3rd Nov
Well... Wesley had baby food for the first time this evening, I steamed and purreed fresh organic carrots. I tried it, and it's delicious, but he HATED it! After trying to give it to him straight, without much success, I tried to mix it with his baby cereal, and it didn't help at all! He just makes a terrible face, turns his head, cries, and screams. He's only had breastmilk and organic rice cereal before this. I'm hoping that it was just a shock, and he'll do better tomorrow, but I don't have much hope. Any suggestions?

Keep trying. They have to get use to it.
If he doesn't want it after a couple days try something besides carrots.

My daughter HATES rice cereal and apples. She barely eats peas, but loves carrots. I think you just kind of have to keep trying...that's what I'm hoping, anyway, lol.

You cant push him if he isnt ready. Let it go and come back to it later. Baby's gut isnt ready for solids until 6 months of age minimum, but that doesnt mean every baby is ready at 6 months.

Just let it go! Baby can survive on BM alone for the first 12 months of life. He doesnt NEED any solids at all until then. At this point solids are just for fun and variety, so if he doesnt want it then just skip it.

You could try mixing it in with a little expressed breast milk. It will sweeten it up a bit with the taste that he's so used to.

Maybe he's not ready for it, Amelie was like that and didn't want solids till around 6 1/2 months. But my pediatrician told us if the baby doesn't like something to introduce the same thing every day for a week, and they will learn to like it- babies taste buds are programmable

Oh, I know! I had planned to exclusively breastfeed for as long as possible, but with him losing weight, we had to start cereal, and he's still losing weight... So it's time for baby food!   He's a little over 5 1/2 months, so I don't feel so terrible...

Yeah, that's what I heard too, so I'm going to do that... I wouldn't want to start peas or something else, and then him get a rash. Then I wouldn't know if it was from the carrots or peas, so we're sticking to carrots for a week!

Was he hungry? My LO will not eat his solids if he's hungry. He works himself up into a frenzy and doesn't want to eat the things he normally loves! I give him the boob for like 5 mins, just to quite down the hunger pains and then he devours his solids and finishes off with another boobie session. You can try that but if he still doesn't like them, freeze them and try again in a few days. I read that it can take 15-20 tries until a baby will either accept a particular food or reject it completely. Good luck!

Yeah, I had just fed him... so maybe he wasn't hungry enough to eat them... I'm going to try again in the morning before his morning nursing session... Hopefully that helps!
