Suing over deaths

posted 3rd Nov
Ok I could not think of a good way to word the topic so I will try my best to explain what I mean. People suing colleges over hazing deaths or the recent $16.5 million payout to a family of a woman who died after a radio contest from water intoxication. Am I the only one who finds this stupid? Since when is it a colleges fault that one of its students willingly participates in hazing? I understand the radio station shouldn't have held the contest but for the family to be awarded $16.5 million because the woman agreed to participate is ridiculous. I would think these adults would be accountable for their own actions and their deaths shouldn't be given a cash payout.

I don't understand why people sue for death at all. If you truley cared no amount of money would change what had happened. People are always looking for a get rich quick scheme and it's sad that death is a part of that plan.

I think that suing over hazing is stupid because most schools ban it anyway and it happens underground most of the time. At my school they kicked a bunch of kids out who were on the tennis team because they dumped ketchup on a girl as part of a hazing ritual.

The water intoxication is different unless she signed a waiver acknowledging the risks.

I still wish I was the lady who sued McDonalds because the coffee was hot and it burned her!

(well...not her, but could even think about doing something like that!)

But I agree...its ridiculous. Unless they were wrongful in their actions, which I dont see in this case, then...its ridiculous.

i watched the radio contest thing on the news (ha that sounded funny) and they asked if she wanted to continue. she said yes. she had every opportunity to stop, just like the other contestants did. and like viktorya said, no amount of money is going to bring them back.

I understand suing over death in medical malpractice. Sometimes getting the hospital to pay is the only way they will change their ways. My parents sued after my brother died because the doctor was in gross negligence. Them suing and winning was the reason the doctor lost his license in Texas.

I think she should know the risks. It isn't like water intoxication is a uncommon occurence.

This is why: as a punishment to those who participated. It isn't necessarily to enrich yourself.

I'm currently looking into it for myself. I want my pound of flesh, and if this is the recourse I have I'm in. My girls deserve to have a daddy, and they won't now. Someone deserves to pay.

But in the coffee case the coffee was hot enough to give her third degree burns. IMO that's way too hot. Thank god she spilled it on didn't drink it. She would've ruined her throat permanently.

I don't think I'd ever heard of it before then to be honest.

I really don't get how a family can sue a college over a hazing death. Like you said there are rules in place to stop the type of behavior and it isn't like the school can crash every fraternity and sorority to figure out what they are up to.

I agree completely, the same with the majority of these celebrity rape cases. It seems like the majority of the victims want money or "settle out of court" as opposed to getting actual justice

Was there negligence on the part of the military?

Exactly!!! You shouldn't be allowed to get a cash settlement over rape.

I agree.
If a loved one of mine died and a lawsuit was possible I would sue to pay for the funeral arrangements and for funding for the particular cause.

I would want the money to go to make sure the same thing never happened to another family. If that makes sense.
