Reestablish/build supply.

posted 3rd Nov
My baby will be a month tomorrow. I never really established a great milk supply. At most I could pump 4 1/2 oz at a time, but 2-3 as more realistic. I'm a full time student, I had a c section and so getting back to school and catching up, the stress the pain I was in from surgery, exhaustion, etc. I tried really hard with pumping when I couldn't nurse and I loved nursing I just felt I wasn't producing enough, especially when I read some women pumping 10+ oz at a time at a month along, I just gave up. Well it's been a few days and I missed it so I've been pumping every 4 hrs (as much as my scheduled allows) and nursing.. But my supply doesn't seem to be coming in.. Is it too late for me to nurse again? Have I done irreversible damage? Will I ever make more then 2 oz every 4 hours?

Try nursing your LO....

Fenugreek/Blessed thistle..

Sorry I don't have any experience with this. Try consulting an LC

I think you should try nursing as much as possible and then add the pumping on top of that. The more you nurse and pump, the more milk will come in. And keep taking your vitamins!

When I started pumping, I only got a few ounces at a time too. I think that's natural. After a while, I made so much milk that it hurt. My lactation consultant actually told me to stop pumping because I was constantly engorged.

In the meantime, there's no harm in supplementing with formula until your supply kicks in.

You might even just forgo the pumping if it's too much work and supplement while you're away and nurse when you're at home...in the morning and then before bedtime. Any amount of breast milk is good for baby.

Good luck!

I had problem getting my supply in and my lactation consultant told me that your milk lets down b/c of the skin to skin contact, not the pumping action. So by pumping your not really getting your supply in, you may only be keeping it from drying up completely. Here's what I did: free the next 2-3 days completely and just nurse as much as possible, I mean as much as possible. I would let my baby nurse for as long as 2-3 hours if she wanted to. This built my supply up quickly and after the inital 3 days it is not so time consuming! Good luck
