I'm looking for some pacifier education

posted 3rd Nov
What's the deal with them? I mean, what are the negatives & positives of pacis? I see many KOM's that say either 'anti' or 'pro' pacis, and I don't understand what's so bad OR goodabout them?

For some reason I feel awful about WANTING my son to take a pacifier. I EBF and sometimes he wants to comfortsuck, but my boob doesn't make him happy for whatever reason, so I stick the pacifier in there. He doesn't seem to really "take" to it... I have to hold it in sometimes. Is it bad to do this? Or does it not matter..?

Ainsley loves her binky. She was a huge comfort sucker, and she's FF so that didn't work out too well. She'd over eat and throw up. Now she's 10 months, uses it in the car, and for bedtime.

Up untl about 10 months, babies have a reflex to suck, giving them a pacifier is not a bad thing. It's when they are a year or more and still toting the thing around...

why would a mom not want her child to have one at all?

My daughter is like this too, it drives me crazy. She wants to just suck but gets mad when milk comes out it seems, but she won't take a darn paci.

because older kids end up having them.
talking with them in their mouth etc.
I didnt want my son to have one because it was one less thing to take away.

i was wayyy anti binky for the first two weeks. my daughter hates, i mean HATES the carseat. we gave in to the binky and car rides are alot more peaceful now.
i EBF and she would use me as a human passifier. the bink gave me a bit of freedom. i am no longer anti-passi but i will take it away in a couple months.

the only problem i see is when you see a two year old walkin around with a passi in their mouth. we only use it for the car and for naps, at night time she pretty much uses my boob for a passi but we are tryin to break that habbit.

i don't know really? maybe they are afriad of it becoming a lovie? or think it will bother their teeth? most pacifiers are developed so you can use the appropriate age. some moms just dont like them period. the only thing i hated was trying to get a pic without the damn t hing in. lol but my son was off of his at 10 months no problem.
for example soothies come in 0-3 and 3-6 and even a teething pacifier. gumdrops have a premie pacifier. it's natural for them to want to suck.

I don't know. I plan on taking Ainsley's away soon. In the car first, then at bedtime. I don't want her to keep it forever, she loves it, but she doesn't really need it anymore.

I EBF'ed both of my boys and they were both binky babies as well. Don't feel bad about it.
The pros:
Research shows that sucking on a paci reduces the risk of SIDS
Helps baby with their need to suck
Is easier to break a paci habit than a thumb-sucking habit when the time comes

The Cons:
Creates what some believe is a bad habit
Can sometimes have an effect on breastmilk supply (baby sucks paci instead of breast, thus doesn't stimulate milk production as needed)
Can cause teeth problems if allowed to stay too long

Those are just the big ones...there are always two sides to every argument. Do what is right for you and your baby and you can't go wrong!

My son had one up until a week ago. 23 months and he just gave his up. I don't see anything wrong with them. It was his lovey, and he got rid of it when he wanted to.

that's how I was at first. I kept getting pissed at the hopsital people for giving Jonah a paci when he was first born! but thenhe wanted to comfort suck ALL the time and we had an episode with a screaming car ride... and I decided to start giving them to him. I only was anti-paci at first because I was afraid of nipple confusion

I didn't know it could effect breast milk suppy...? that's kinda scary O.O but I'm not worried about that really. My boy's a good eater so far...

I had an idea about it affecting teeth because I've heard thumb sucking does that...

I totally understand you. I breast fed exclusively and it hurts to be used as a human pacifier too much! If you can get your baby on the binky, more power to ya.

My babe took to his pacifier right away. But he went through stages where we would have to remind him how to keep it in his mouth (yep, we would hold it in for him until he latched on). He used it to go to sleep and it calmed him in the car when he got antsy.

He's 11 months old now and he weaned himself off of it...maybe two months ago. Now he has a lovie (his blue bunny) and that's his source of comfort during bedtime and car rides.

Sucking is a totally natural source of comfort for little babies.
If your baby likes his binky, I say let him have it.
