Is suicide always selfish?

I believe it was yesterday that I posted a topic in FFA with a poll asking how many people have either tried to, or thought about committing suicide. There were a few responses that said "suicide is selfish." I admit that if you're sitting down to think deeply about it, suicide is selfish in a sense because you're leaving your loved ones behind, but I think the people who said that failed to realize when you're genuinely contemplating about taking your own life, thinking logically isn't exactly on your side.

What are your true feelings concerning suicide? Is it a selfish act, regardless of the circumstances?

i had a good friend commit suicide a little over a year ago, and im still mad. totally selfish.

usually, yes, i think it is. i understand life can be hard, etc, but its definitely the easy way out.... things always change..... and to take the lazy way out and leave so many people hurting from your actions.... and not caring that youre causing that pain... is selfish, yes. however, attempting it, is usually a cry for help, and if in one way or another, youre trying to ask for help, well then..... kudos for trying to get help? sounds weird, but does it make sense?

if u have children, it is majorly selfish... if ur leaving loved ones behind it is still selfish, and basically any reason is ridiculous i think. there is no reason to kill yourself. There are people that die everyday of disease or whatever reason that would kill for one more day on this earth,and others are killing themselves b/c of god knows what...i dont get it...but thats my opinion

I've contemplated it multiple times.
Even recently, even though I have my son.
I still believe it is incredibly selfish. I wouldn't do it now because of my son...I don't want to leave him without me, even though sometimes I think he wont' miss me too much, he's too young to really remember me...but ultimately...it's selfish.

Yes, it makes sense, but I'm wondering why you say that it is the "easy way out." Deciding on suicide isn't exactly an easy decision to make.

i think in a way it's a selfish act. but for the loved ones who want you to live so bad, they don't have to live your life.

I think it depends on the situation.If it is a long drawn out process of writing letters, saying goodbyes and or killing someone else as well-then yes it is selfish.But if it is depression (not situational) then I don't think it is selfish, just a terrible solution.

It is not selfish if you think about it. Yeah you would be leaving your loved ones behind, but you also doing what you think is right.

I don't think its selfish. I think people who get angry at people who do it are selfish. Imagine what a hard spot you must be in in your life in order to end it. If I was at that place, Im pretty sure I wouldnt want to live either. Its sad, and there are other options. But you have to be in a very very very shitty place in order to go through with it. And arent in your right mind, your (im sure, dont know never killed myself) not thinking about anyone, INCLUDING yourself, your only thinking about stoping the pain. How can something be selfish, if you arent even thinking about yourself?

One of my husband's bosses committed suicide earlier this year. He was a good man, and we were all shocked and devastated that he took his life that way. We later found out that he had fought depression for nearly 30 years. I think that a person can get to the point where it really does seem like the only way out. I wish that wasn't the case, but I think he was in so much pain that all he could think about was how to make it stop.

I guess its selfish, but who is thinking about others and what they think when they're trying? I also think its selfish to make someone stay alive [like in the case they have a terminal illness and WANT to die] just because someone thinks its selfish.
