I need advice..

posted 3rd Nov
My son is nearing 2 years old.

He no longer is on the bottle, and hasnt had a bottle in 2 months.

However... he still doesnt sleep through the night.
He still gets up once or twice.. He will drink milk out of his sippy, and down it like he has to quench his thirst.

I would really love for him to start sleeping through the night especially since my husband and I are going to start trying again in January for baby #2.

Its second nature for me now to get out of bed with Brennan, however I would love to really not have to worry about him waking up.

My son did the same thing until maybe 2 months ago, when we stopped milk in the sippy completely. He only gets water in it at night before bed. I think he finally realized it wasn't worth waking up for water.

Ive heard that too, and actually tried to give him water, but it just ended up being a fighting crying battle, and I admit I gave in.

Did your son fight and cry for the milk?

give him water, or even tea, in that bottle instead. water and/or tea you could also start leaving in his crib at night, IF youre comfortable with that, since it wont go bad or rot his teeth.... itll wean him off waking up i bet, and if its in his crib, then even if he does wake up, if you know HE knows its there, you can ignore him and let him drink and fall back asleep on his own.

Absolutely, he would scream at bedtime for it. I just kept explaining he could only have water. I'd offer it and even leave the sippy cup with him. He would rarely drink it and I guess he just got over it. He's been sleeping through the night fine ever since.

Hannah did this when she was much much younger.... like a year old or so. She kept waking up for a bottle. Finally I just put water in it instead. It was rough the first 3 or 4 nights b/c she would get upset and cry alot but after that she was cured and has slept through the night (mostly anyways) ever since.

It's just the initial few days that are really tough. If you can stick to it....it's bliss after that.

we just recently got logan off a bottle completely with just water in a sippy cup.
We never gave him milk in a bottle at all, just sippys,
for the middle of the night feedings I would start watering down his milk, to the point where it is eventually just water and you can leave the cup in his bed.
That is what we did with them and formula, we would put less and less formula until eventually it was just a bottle of water, then we just gave him his sippy instead. Now he just lays down with his binky and sippy and falls right asleep, same with Mikaila, just her cup and shes out.

have you had him tested for diabetes? i just read an article in the parenting mag and waking in the middle of the night for something to drink can be a sign. not trying to worry you or anything. My little one at around a year old did the same thing and just like what the other ladies said..once we changed it to water he stopped.

My LO is 17 months old and she is the same way. We broke her of needing anything to go to sleep with but she wakes atleast once a night. Lately though she has just been sleeping through the night (knock on wood) We tried the water and she freaked out and would not stop crying until we got the milk. She downs it then goes right back down. I think that it is just something you kind of got to live with and naturally they will eventually sleep thru the night (hopefully) Good luck with TTC and all and maybe he will just eventually start sleeping thru the night soon on his own!

Alex still does that Mel. We put water in a sippy and let him have that when he wakes up thirsty. He has started waking up less during the night since we started giving him only water, he was waking up three or four times a night, now it's just two or less. So it works, you just have to try to get over if they cry because they want milk.

Luckily for us Alex didn't fight when we switched to water, I am sure that isn't easy to deal with in the middle of the night! Good luck!
