for now while he isn't feeling well I would give in also.
After he feels better I would start watering down his milk that he gets at night, gradually until its just water and just leave his water cup in his bed.

I know what you mean. I am the same way, I think for me it's because at night he turns back into my tiny cuddly baby instead of the mischievous toddler he is during the day. lol So it makes momma bear come out! Maybe if you just keep trying as long as you can handle it then eventually there will be a break through!
