Parenting && Discipline. Too FAR?

Okay so heres a good one. Keep your responses mature, I'm just throwing this out there!! (:

I went over to my friends the other day and she has a 4 year old. He runs around the house naked, chokes the animals, hits people, bites, and throws things. He also finds it funny to pour his soda all over the new born kittens. She says no, but ignores him. He smacks her and continues what he's doing, and she continues whatever she's doing.

In contrast:

I went over to another close friends of mine maybe a week ago-ish, and she has a 3 year old little boy. EVERYONE HAS BOYS, (: Anyways. Her little boy is at the stage where he wants to get into everything, and doesn't want to finish his food. Remember those days? Well when he gets up during dinner, he gets spanked. If he says NO to something small, he gets spanked. If he plays too rough with the cats, (Who beat him up), he gets spanked. He sits in the corner for like 15 minutes, and by then has no idea what he's in the corner for. If he goes to cry, she yells at him.

I understand discipline and stuff, but what's going to far and what's not enough? I just want to hear some opinions, just for my plain curiosity (:

the one in the 2md story seems like she wants to control her kids be the authority and the one in the 1st story seems like she needs super nanny.

its a fine line between strict and liberal.

Personally I think you have some bitches as friends first of all. And second, I do believe in spanking to an extent but not just for any little thing. You shouldnt hit a child just because.

I spank occasionally but i do not use it for everything. and time outs shouldnt be more then one minute for every year old they are. as for food, my son eats on his own time, i give it to him and he eats it when he is ready. my sister would make her step son literally sit at the table for hours until he ate his food. ugh, used to make me so mad lol.

well i have been guilty of the second story..but im not diong it like that anymore.. if you spank for EVERYTHING it becomes ineffective (atleast with my daughter it does) but you cant just ignore it either. i think that alot of ppl think that babies and toddlers dont understand when they re disciplined, but they know more than we tend to give credit for. there is definitely a balance when it comes to discipline

these situations sound like they would make a good bud light commercial. That whole "Too Light" and "Too Heavy" advertising campaign. . . . man oh man

It seems like maybe you all should hang out & maybe your two friends will rub off on each other. They both need something that the other has.

We will only spank for dangerous situations (running into traffic) or outright defiance.
We will always try to redirect first.
Natural consequences (if this than that).

Thats mean though! I beleive in time outs. But 15-20 minutes fora 3 year old   He's going to grow to rebel.

so 3 mins tops for a 3 year old or its ineffective.

I agree with that.

Sounds to me that your first friend doesn't discipline enough, & your second friend goes too far. I would NEVER spank my child. & I dont think its right for any mother to spank their child, for whatever reason.
