Trampoline vs. Bean Bag Chair

posted 3rd Nov
So I've been trying to figure out way that I can help my son here at home, things he can do to get out his frustrations or help stimulate him. In the book I'm reading I saw personal trampolines or even a bean bag chair were sometimes good ideas. Thought this was a cool idea so I went to take him down to the chair store and see if he liked the bean bag chairs. However they were closed, I knew there was a sporting goods store neary by so we went to look at the trampolines. When I showed it to him, he said yes he wanted it, as long as I put it together when we got home so he could jump on it, we couldn't afford both, so we just got the trampoline.

Has anyone ever put one of these together? Do you know how hard it is???? Holy crap, I tried explaining to my son that I totally was underestimated here, it's just not possible for mom, 33 weeks pregnant to put one of these things together. And my son is just getting more and more frustrated, he's already putting the legs on it, and I know I have to get this thing together or else my son is going to be working on it all day until someone gets here who can fix it. Anyways getting to the point, I GOT THAT THING TOGETHER! Not without a lot of fear that it was going to snap back up and impale me with those legs that he was screwing on, but I did it! YAY! My son said, "Good Job MOMMY!" and he jumped on it and gave me a hug and said "thank you mommy!" I think that was all that made the whole scary experience worth it.

Now I know for next time, I'll take a bean bag chair over a personal trampoline

yeah I'm reading it slowly but surely.

It really is hard though trying to figure out what to do and how to determine what is him just being a butt or what is really part of the problem. I'm hoping the trampoline will work, we're attempting nap time again. He's all riled up and yelling and shouting and throwing things.

I'm really struggling with that too, I just got this book called parenting your Asperger child, and it's been good at figuring out some of that, and lists all the different functions of behavior, The more I read about this stuff I hear stories like yours,, (with good outcomes) I hope Jamil's communication can get better so we can better understand his needs...

Bleh, Jamil loves the trampoline at therapy but it hasen't helped much at home yet

here either but we did just get it today.

Jacob was honestly 100 times worse when he couldn't talk. Everything was grunting and pointing and then a temper tantrum. He would hurt you until you did what he wanted, but he couldn't say. Once we started giving him free reign over the pantry and fridge, and let his words come slowly. It seriously got better. We've just learned what we don't want him to eat, goes in the extra fridge and pantry.

Right now he's in these moods where nap time isn't an option, and it turns into a yelling match, him yelling at me that he doesn't want to sleep, and me trying not to yell back, because he's so frustrating. He'll throw things and tell me he's not tired, and we'll work on trying to get him down for almost 2 hours. If he doesn't sleep on the days he gets up earlier that 8 am, he starts going seriously bonkers, at 6 pm, no joke.

Ok well I think now he's trying to get out his nap by taking a poop, so I have to go bail him out of that.

i worked as a school counselor intern in a school with an autistic boy and we used the trampoline with him and it worked great. we used it as a reinforcement when he did what was needed or as a form of redirection when he wouldn't do anything else. sometimes we would tell him he couldn't jump unless he did this or that and it worked wonders.

we're using it as a redirection. If he starts to hit the dog but is just looking like he's going to but hasn't yet, we tell him to go jump and it's kind of working. Going to keep trying it though.

Have you Ladies worked/tried Exercise balls for Chairs?
I know alot of schools are starting to use them with alot of success for children with everything from Sensory disorders to Attention issues. I don't know if ASD children are working with them though.

Amazingly enough the kids actually use them fr chairs & not to kick/throw at others!!

we have one here, but it's used mostly like a play ground ball. I know my son loves the ones with handles that he can bounce around on. He uses our exercise ball as something to throw himself on and bounce off right now.
