Pre-existing conditions...

posted 3rd Nov
Something else I heard on the radio this morning...

Living organ donation being seen as a pre-existing condition.
Feel like doing a good deed and donating an organ to someone in need? Unfortunate that this can leave you with thousands of dollars of medical debt as you could be denied medical coverage as this can be considered a pre-existing condition.

Here's an article about the specific story I heard about this morning:
http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/2009/11/01/1101donors.html

Along the same note...
Anderson Cooper recently had a woman on his show who was denied coverage by her insurance company after she was raped and given anti-HIV drugs following the rape. This was also seen as a pre-existing condition. She was denied coverage.

Here's an article about it:
http://www.ourfuture.org/blog-entry/2009104427/are-you-pre-existing-condition

There are also other examples listed in the above article as to what may be seen as a pre-existing condition that you may not expect. At least, I wasn't expecting them.

I don't know what kind of debate this might be, but... what do you think about all these lines being drawn as far as "pre-existing conditions"? Do you think it's going too far? Or do you think this is all legit, as far as insurance goes?

I do think it's getting ridiculous and sort of defeats the purpose of having health insurance. It seems as if it's only for those who are already healthy to stay healthy.

There should be no denial for any pre-existing conditions.

My mom found a lump in her breast 8 months ago and she still hasn't had it looked at because she doesn't want to find out if it's breast cancer before she can get health insurance

I completely agree. I think it's absurd. I try to understand some sort of lines being in place... but I just can't justify any of it in my head. Other than money, money, money. It's sick.

Omg.
That's awful.

I was denied coverage by my insurance company for my anxiety medication and doctor's visits to get on the medication....pre-existing bs. I know that is nowhere near the same, but it is a scary feeling, nonetheless. I had to stop taking my meds coldturkey. No walk in the park. And my doctor dropped me, because they denied the claims, and at the time I couldn't afford to pay them out of pocket.

I was listening to this on the way to school this morning. I think it's sad and outright stupid. Should mental disorders, family histories, weight and so forth be taken into consideration as "pre-existing" conditions too?

Fabulous point. May as well, at this point, right? Only the perfectly healthy should be allowed to have coverage cause well... that makes a hell of a lot of sense.

Awful.

Anderson Cooper is a douchebag. I think if we let insurance companies compete across state lines we can cut costs.. Look at the telephone companies..as soon as they cut the state line laws, prices went down and now everyone can call long distance for a very low price! bad example yes but I do think it would help healthcare.
