Pediatric OCD?

posted 3rd Nov
Anyone have a child with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or know anything about it?

My husband had it as a kid, and our school counseler sent home an info packet about it.

I think my 6 yo has it

How is it normally treated?

It is common not unheard of but they usually treat it with medicine. Or you could look into "Cognitive-behavioral Therapy" which uses no meds at all and treats the obsessions and compulsions almost entirely! Sorry I am a psyc major and love studying behaviors like this I am a total nerd! but if u want more info let me know i have lots of info and a really good site for it.

I def want to get him into CBT. The more I read about it, the more things jump out that I hadn't even thought of...

I have OCD and I agree CBT would probably be the best approach!

I thought he was just having anxiety, because I didn't think he was doing any rituals. But he asks me a thousand times a day if he has something in his ear. He is obsessed with thinking that he, or his little brother will get a cavity. He goes through 10 pairs of pajamas a day. And he can't explain why he keeps changing. He has this weird thing about socks. He wont eat at school because he can't brush his teeth there. And his Christmas wish list was "To not have to worry so much"

I went through it as a child...but mine was "incurable obsessive compulsive disorder". didn't even know that form existed, ha. no child rehab could fix me. I don't think they'd seen anyone as bad as me, I was a complete mess.
I would just suggest you use any form of meds as a last resort, because they fucked me over. that's just me of course, but they changed me.
the only way I learned to cope was on my own, through my own positive energy, noone could help me but myself.
obviously it won't ever really work but there's ways to manage it.

I think the first thing my family did was get me diagnosed at first, not sure how you'd go about that where you are or anything.
hope it all works out!

Jacob may possibly be a mild case, he was evaluated before and it doesn't really affect his daily life too terribly, but at times it's very difficult to reason with him. He has to have certain things a cetain way, like his food has to be served this way, and he has to have this kind of juice, just all kinds of things. If it's not the correct way, his world comes crashing lol. but he's only 2 1/2 so we will see how it develops.

I was instructed to just shake his world up a little bit since he is so young, maybe I could help him outgrow some of his habits. Kind of teach him it's okay if soemthing isn't done a certain way, plus I enrolled him in school and he has made major improvements just being around other kids. I know yours is older so i honestly don't have too much advice lol.

Thanks   I think school is making it so much harder for my son, because he puts so much pressure on himself
