Irritable Uterus??

posted 2nd Nov
So I started having some pretty intense contractions last Thursday night that never quit until Friday after my dr appt. I was put on moniters and was having the contractions every 3-4 minutes and they were lasting 3-40 seconds. The dr said that I had an irritable uterus and started me on Terbutiline to help stop the contractions. He did check my cervix, and it was closed and long at that point.I am on bed rest, drinking tons of water and this medicine is making me feel like CRAP!! And despite all my efforts, I am still contracting. So have any of you ladies gone through this and made it to term with your LOs? I am only 28 weeks, so it's tooooo early for her to arrive!!

Yes my doc was worried about me making it to 32 weeks because of constant contractions but baby was born at 38weeks6days so just stay in bed and make sure you get plenty of fluids. They will help lessen comtractions also if you can try to cut down your caffeine intake until you get to term. That helps too

I did read about this medicine when I got home and I caught that part...it is not FDA approved for this purpose. It's used normally to treat asthma and emphazema I believe. It supposidly relaxed the smooth muscles(uterus) which stops the contractions temporarily. I hate taking it...it makes me shake, tremble, my heart rate is always around 115and it makes me have horrible headaches. I told my dr all of this and of course his reply was "I have been using this med for 30 years and have yet to come across complications...and it's the most commonly used drug in America for this purpose" UGG!! I plan on using it for a few weeks if it ever starts to even work!! Thanks for the reply, and I am glad your friends daughter turned out well.

Thanks for the encouraging words...I am sure doing my best. I have a two year old to chase around and an eight year old as well, so it's hard to stay off my feet. But I am giving it my best shot!! I didn't know that about caffeine though, I will try to lower my intake of that as well.

What kind of shots are they giving you? I had steriod injections and some iv meds with my daughter at 28 weeks and carried her to term. But I wasn't having near the painful contractions. I am literally exhausted from them...are yours painful?

I went through your exact situation with the contractions and the med. I started around 25/26 weeks with the constant contractions and was put on bed rest. I was in and out of the hospital where they would give me the shot or terbutaline. I ended up having my baby at 31 weeks. He was in the NICU and had to have a hole in his lung closed. Nothing showed the hole was caused by the meds it was just due to him being early. Even the day I had him they put me on mag sulfate and that still didn't stop them so I had an emergency c-section. He was in the hospital for almost a month. . I hope your situation is better than mine was. Everyone is different and reacts different to these meds. My LO is now a year and healthy as ever!

Wow...you are a strong mama going through all of that! I am happy to hear you LO is doing so well now. I sure hope this LO holds out as long as possible. Were the contractions you were having pretty strong? Mine aren't killing me or anything, but they are very painful. They only lastfor around 40 or so seconds...but they stay for hours!! This goes on all damn day! They go for a few hours and then come back...it's exhausting!

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but thanks, it was had going home w/o my LO and finding time to go visit him in the NICU. My contractions weren't real painful, the real painful part was towards the end when he was actually coming. Before he came my belly felt like it was bruised from all the contractions though, like if I touched my belly it was tender. Kinda like I did a million plus sit ups! How are you doing now?
