Last name confusion

posted 2nd Nov
Ultimately I know its MY decision on who's last name to give my daughter.
Me and her father aren't together. Everyone I talk to keeps telling me I should use my last name for her since we aren't together. I think its shitty since it's not about me and him. It's about her. I think its fair to give his last name to her even though we're not together , right?

I didnt give my son his father's last name. There was no reason to. He has my maiden name.

Ultimately it is your decision, however I think that a child should (under normal circumstances) have their father's last name. Maybe you could do your last name as your baby's middle name and the father's as your baby's last name. Just a suggestion. Whatever decision that you make for your child it should be because it is the way that you want it. I just wanted to offer my opinion.

I'm a fan of hyphenated last names myself.

Give the baby both of your last names!!

Think about who will be with her more.

Do you want to have people calling you by his last name when you go to school functions?

For example. If his name is "Smith" and your name is "Brown"... you're going to go to school functions and as Baby Smith's mother... you will (by default) be called Mrs. Smith.

Heh.

Just think of it like that. Giving her the name that is the same is yours is a bit more practical, in terms of introductions (and paperwork!)

not if he isnt going to be there for her. but if you think he will be active in her life. go for it. Though, I know some moms who do it to try and get their exes back. so if that also isn't another reason you want to . like I said. Do what you want.

Well, if you two are on good terms & he's going to be a father, I would. Otherwise, stick with yours or hyphenate.

I would want my child to have the same last name as me, no matter what my situation was, if I wasn't married or together, the babe would have mylast name for sure.

Yup, me too. If I wasnt married to my husband and we were just dating, my girls would have my maiden name as well. Unless I'm married, the kids would've all gotten my last name.
