High Temperature Question

posted 2nd Nov
Ok my son was sick this weekend, he was vomiting, he didn't today doesn't seem himself but getting there. I just took his temp rectally it was 99.6 F and my daughter who is 20 months had a bit of diarrea but hasn't started barfing yet, I took her temp rectally and it was 100.6 F.

My question is do you take off a degree for taking the temp rectally or no?

I am worried. I know I know I am worried about the H1N1 we have decided not to get shots.

i'm pretty sure you take off a degree rectally.

i believe my son and i had h1n1 last week.. but he had a fever for only a day and then it broke and he was fine! both of our doctors were saying it was just like the regular flu. just keep them hydrated and i'm sure they will be fine!

No, the rectal temperatures are the most accurate. If you are that concerned, call your children's doctor's and speak to the nurse. However, neither of those are extremely high and you can let the fever run it's course without medicine, but you are certainly welcome to treat with medicine too. We were told by our Pedi to not treat temps under 101 for our oldest (he is four) but I think that was the case after he turned two, and we usually don't treat temps under 100 for our youngest who is one. The fever is the body's natural way of fighting infection.

That's ok. It is fine to be paranoid. But the rectal temperature is the most accurate. Typically you add a degree or multiple degrees if it is taken via another source. My SIL just sent this to me today. My youngest was running 104 last night (which we went to the doctor's today and confirmed that he does indeed have the swine flu (both of mine do, but the youngest is hit harder).

Hope this helps. http://www.eastsuburbanpediatrics.com/494/18422.html

It is the information page posted by her pediatric office on temperatures.

Do they take a blood test to confirm the flu? Then they just sent you home?

Rectal is the most accurate you don't change anything.

The only one I've ever heard you change is if you do it under the arm you add a degree.

BTW your kids temp is very low grade. I don't think you should stress about it right now. My daughter has a temp of 100.1 and the doctors said not to worry about it yet.

For my kids, given that they had had the "flu" symptoms for more than 48 hours, the doctor did a visual and symptom check up and said that they had all the typical symptoms of H1N1. He said there was no real need for an actual test to confirm given that the treatment given, tamiflu, is only effective if given within 24 - 48 hours of the start of the flu. We were sent home with instructions as to when they could return to school, what we could expect (the littlest one who is just over a year is supposed to have high fevers for the next few days, more loose stools and vomiting, and lots of mucus, coughing, etc.). We are to manage the symptoms as appropriate, (which we do mostly by steaming them out in the bathroom, and motrim if their fevers exceed 101), and to watch for any signs that he develops breathing problems since that is the major concern in a patient his age. My oldest is pretty much completely over it already and didn't really have much of a problem other than being sick with a high fever, loose stools, vomiting, and lots of mucus, coughing, etc. The doctor also told us to get the boys outside in the sunshine as the weather permits, to open up all the windows in the house to air it out, and to make sure they are both drinking pleanty of fluids.

I wish you all the best with your little ones. I understand how nerve racking it can be when your little one's are sick. Hope they feel better soon momma :-)
