Questions about the Army

posted 2nd Nov
My SO really really really wanted to join the Airforce, but was declined. He is now wanting to join the army... I'm kind of iffy. Mainly based on hearsay. I've heard they just want to recruit you, it's dangerous, they don't really care, and blah blah blah.

So those of you with SO's in the army or if you are in the army yourself, How beneficial is it to you? What are the benefits? Is it worth it? or did it ruin your life like all my family says it's going to do to us?

Just to get straight to the point my SO lost his job, we are flat broke, we have a good 2 weeks to find something to do with ourselves. He's been thinking about the military for quite some time, no better time then now I suppose!

Why was he declined? If you don't mind answering.
Maybe they'll decline him for the same reason

The military in general is dangerous, there is always a possibility of being in conflict. That doesn't change from branch to branch.

The benefits are similar to the AF, same insurance, similar compensation, etc...

The Army is actually very similar. I know growing up on AF bases and then visiting my Step-Dad on Army bases, the AF def have nicer amenities. They also have the largest budget out of the branches...I think that's why.

But, I'm very pro-military...all branches. I don't think it'll ruin your family.

True. My guys in the Air Force, has been for nearly 3 years. He spent 15 months in Turkey. Basically I've heard the Navy is the "safest" branch. But any branch a possibility,

My SO and I are both in the National Guard and one of the only downsides so far is time spent away from each other. He's at training right now.

But there are always ups and downs to the military. but I wouldn't change my enlisting nor would I ever ask my SO to quit. It was definitely one of my better decisions.

My husband is a Marine and its a hard life. Im very proud to be a marine wife, but most of our marriage is spent apart. He's always training, in the field, another state or deployed. Itsa stressful life but its always amazing when he comes home. There just has to be a TON of trust and patience(and lots of letters and web caming) I have nothing but respect to any woman or man supporting and loving our troops.

Just a heads up. Depending on his ASVAB score will determine which MOS (job) he can get, but with an OWI his jobs are drastically brought down to slim picking. BUT once he enlists, graduates boot camp & AIT (school), finishes his enlistment, and renlists then he will have security clearance. With security clearance his pick of MOS will broaden (with that and his ASVAB scores as well). I know this because a friend of mine IRL just went through it. Had a DWI years back, even had it brought down to PI, and still didn't have securtiy clearance not until he renlisted.

Not all recuriters are evil and will tell you lies so you can sign on the dotted line. You have to find the right recuriter. If that takes you guys looking around to find one that you two are comfortable with. So be it. Call around and go by different recruiting offices.

my husband is in the marine corp-hes been in for 3 years now and were getting out next september but honestly, its a love hate relationship. it depends on his job really on how he gets treated. hes been hurt bc he deployed and got back last year so hes been on limited duty so lately its been easy for us-but weve definitly had our ups and downs. its a hard lifestyle..but its also really rewarding..deployments always suck-but those first kisses and falling in love twice is awesome   the benefits are good..esp if ur broke, you get all ur healthcare-a housing allowance..the moneys decent..but going into the army his deployments will most likely be super long..but you get used to the lifestyle..so if u can handle a lot of stress-i say go for it, it really is rewarding at the same time..but if ya wanna talk more in depth im always here

Thank you for all the help ladies! We just talked to the recruiter today, and I'm pretty sure this is what we want to do. It's for the best. With all his school credits, he transfers straight into E3 rank, which means we can live on base with him. I'm not sure if you all know about the ranks and everything. The only problem with everyone wanting to join the military, it's backed up and he won't get to go into training at least for two months. Until that time, I don't believe we will have anywehre to live unless I get this job tomorrow!
