Is this inappropriate?

I figured I would post in here to get some input on this problem. Please no drama I just wanna know how someone who has lost a child would feel.
Backstory: My friend was killed in Iraq in March 2009 accidentally. Marines playing with guns and it ended badly. Well me and him were neighbors all through out high school and I told him parents I wanted to keep in touch with them.
Jump to now: Both his parents know of my son and have met him. His first B-day is coming up in December and I was wanting to know if it would be ok to send them an invitation and picture of him or if you think it would still be to hard on them. I am so lost of what to do. I just don't want them to be really upset if they were to receive it.

I couldn't imagine why your son would upset them.

I dont know if I misunderstood something or what but I dont see any reason at all why it would upset them. BTW I am so sorry for your loss!

I don't know if i'm missing something but I don't see why your son's 1st birthday would make them upset?

I think it would be nice for you to invite them. They just won't come if they don't want to. I'm sure they will at least appreciate that you thought of them.

Nah...I wouldnt worry about that at all.
Treat them the same mama. Send the pic/invite. Itll make them smile  

I don't think they would be upset. It would probably make them really happy. I was still very close with my ex's mom (he passed away Feb. '07 while I was pregnant with my daughter) and she enjoys seeing her so much. I have been very bad at keeping in touch though lately. It always makes her happy to see us though.

That's very nice of you to think so deeply into it, but I think you're thinking WAY too deep into it.
Every man/boy is someones son, if that hurts them, they need to stay inside forever, which I doubt they want to do. I bet you'll make them happy.

Yea I really don't wanna make them sad. I love them to much. She is so upset. She quit her job and doesn't really go out much. His mom is a wreck. Poor woman!!

DH said not to send them one. I just really wanna keep in touch with them. I wanna make them feel welcome still since we lived next door to each other for 4 years. They have since moved. A few months before he went to Iraq.

We were really close. He took me on my 1st rollercoaster and then rode it again with my 5 more times after. lol We always rode to school together and we had ROTC together. Wish we would have had more time.
