Halloween debate

posted 1st Nov
A little late on this but it pisses me off and I would like to know if I'm justified in being peeved.
So yesterday we had Halloween here - it was a blast. My little guy is too small to go out door to door so we had a blast at home giving out candy and watching the passerbyers...
All of a sudden, the doorbell rings, theres a big group of kids...Trick or treating - they get their candy from the bowl and then all of a sudden one of them reaches in her pocket and hands me a pamphlet from her church...it says this...
"Thank you for the treat! I'd like to share something special with you too! I want you to know that G-d's very own son, Jesus, loves us all very much. He lived a perfect life and then he died on a cross to pay for all the bad things (sins) we have done...blah blah blah" It was laminated and had all the church info and such on the back of it, so it was obviously distributed at the church specifically for the kids, specifically for Halloween.

I have no problems with different religions and I love the fact that we have freedom of religion. I do have an issue with churches specifically using kids on occasions like this where most people willingly and encouragingly open their doors to all the kids to see them enjoy the candy and see the costumes.

The more I think about it, the more wrong I think it is. I'm planning on writing the church an email and letting them know my disappointment (respectively of course) and letting them know that if they are going to distribute their propaganda to homes on Halloween, not to include mine in the mix.

Am I wrong? Are they wrong?

As a Christian that would aggravate me a lot. Why feel the need to push your beliefs on people. It's completely unnecessary especially using kids as pawns on Halloween.

exactly, you can't do that to kids - and the kicker was that there weren't any adults around

I personally get things like this happening to me all the time. In the parking lot of stores, at my own door and so on. I am atheist and although I could care less about what anyone else may chose to believe I personally hate having religion pushed on me.

I had one instance where me and my SO were shopping in Target and I was pregnant. There was another young couple in the aisle and they struck up a convo with us. They seemed nice and then all the sudden handed us a pamphlet about their church and told us it would be great if we could come. I hate having this happen to me. I don't hand out info on why I think God is a big fairy tale to people. I don't go around trying to convince people to NOT believe and it annoys me that it happens to me all the time.

I think you should definitely write a letter. Although it may not get anywhere I still think I would want my voice heard by someone at the church to let them know that is not acceptable behavior. Good luck!

I don't care if the adults want to come to my door and attempt to sell me on their religions or try to bring pamphlets etc. Attempt is the word, I'm not really shopping for religions being the fallen Jew I am. But I can't believe that they would essentially recruit the children on such an occasion to do their bidding. Thats what bothers me

Okay I think that is a pushy, agreed.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, on one hand I don't see anything wrong with it if the child understood what he was doing and the reasons he was asked to do it were from a positive place.  If they were just trying to get some new members for their church and lied to the kid or they really thought there were too many sinners out there that needed to be stopped, then I'd have a problem with it.  But not everyone is out to manipulate people.

It happens a lot here in my town. I don't go around advertising I am atheist and personally I usually smile and try to be polite but it really IRKS me! I mean if the table was turned and I was giving out pamphlets on evolution or atheism in a parking lot I would expect people to feel peeved at me as well. Hpwever I don't think religion is something that needs to be pushed on people so I keep it to myself.

I am a Christian. I understand how you feel, even instances like that where someone is really pushing to talk to me about God makes me feel weird, I've had people come to my door and invite me to their church... that's pushy too me, but a pamphlet on Halloween wouldn't bother me...

recently we have been having Latter Day Saints people come to our door. Mind you I have 4 dogs and a toddler. They just love coming during naptime and of course my dogs bark and wake my baby. They ask "do you have any Spanish speaking neighbors?" They don't even want me, they just use me to get to my neighbors??? Anyways we have recently put a little note on our door about knocking and such......One line goes "EVEN IF YOU WERE SENT BY GOD HIMSELF, DO NOT SOLICIT!" My fiancee wrote it and I had to LOL at that.

I am really open to religion, meaning if someone could actually prove to me to that God exists, I am open to believing but at this point in my life I don't think that will happen and I am comfortable in my beliefs. I have a lot of Christian family members and occasionally I even attend special events at my Grandmas church for her out of respect but I just don't believe it.

I guess it doesn't bother me. But I understand why it might upset some people. I get people coming to my door all the time, I take there stuff and smile. I guess I see it as the little kid sharing his beliefs, not telling you, you have to believe in this or die now! But I understand not everyone wants to have that stuff given to them.

No I don't think you're wrong. I'd be annoyed myself. The church across the street from me sends a paper out a week before saying they will be collecting food for food banks. I don't mind this at all, they just come by and are very nice and don't push anything on you. I can respect that.
