my labor story!

On Thursday, October 29, 2009 dh and I braved the snow storm and icey roads to drive to the hospital early in the morning. We got there about 7:00 for my induction. They already had a room set up for me, and they started me on cytotec or cervidil or something that started with a c lol. Basically the little pill they insert into your cervix to make you dilate. When they first checked me I was dilated to a 1 and 75% effaced. They checked after 3 hours and I had dilated to a 2 1/2 and was 80% effaced so they gave me another dose. After another three hours, I was only dilated to a 3. My contractions were coming fairly regular and getting stronger, they were up to about the 60's at this point. After being on the pitocin for about 2 hours, they checked me again and I was still a 3. So the doctor came in and broke my water and hooked me up to an internal monitor. Basically a monitor they stick up your vagina to check contractions, because the other contraction monitor they had wasn't working right on me. This was the most painful part of the whole process. I screamed and cried while she was putting it in me and afterwards I begged for the epideral. The epideral was scary because the doctor said "oh no" while doing it. NOT something you wanna hear when someone's poking your spine! But while I was sitting up in position to get the epideral, they put several towels and diaper pads under me for my water. Even that didn't stop all of my water. I had a TON! So with every contraction I told the nurse that I was going to gush a lot of water. She thought all of the towels would stop it, until it spilled all over the floor and on my dh's shoes haha! I wish there was a way to measure how much water I lost, because it was an extreme amount. But after the epideral they checked me again in about an hour and a half and I was a 6. Only fifteen minutes after they said "6" I told dh that something wasn't right with my epideral, the inside of my vagina hurt a lot and I couldn't take it, I needed them to make sure that everything was okay. He ran and grabbed the nurse, she checked me again and said "wow you went from a 6 to a 9 in 15 minutes!" And she ran to get the anesthesiologist, who put a shot in my epideral hoping it would drip down to my tail bone to make me not feel the pain anymore. It worked, but also made my legs extremely dead. So the doctor came in and said "she's a 9? let's push!" I cried when they told me to push because I felt like everything had flown by, even though it was about 16 hours after we had gotten to the hospital and dh assured me that it was time now lol. He had to hold one of my legs, I pushed as hard as I could which I was told I was pushing very efficiently for someone who had no control over her legs. At 11:28 pm, my son was born. I only tore a little and needed just a few stitches. I can't even begin to describe how perfect he is. Thank you for reading!
