Breatfeeding Insecurities....

posted 1st Nov
My daughter is 10 days old and it seems like the past 3 days when I breastfeed her she is really fussy and has even thrown up all that she ate. Just the other day she threw up 6 or7 times in about 30 minutes or so. Sometimes she seems fine and doesnt spit up or throw up and then other times she seems sick.Alot of the time I just think she has an upset stomach or something. How do you know when you breastfeed if your baby is reacting to something you have eaten verses having stomach acid? Please I need some advice. I am starting to loose cofidence in breastfeeding and am afraid to eat alot of things because I dont know if something I eat will upset her. It brakes my heart knowing that I could be the reason she is sick and I hate knowing its my fault when she is so sick and miserable. She is even to the point where she doesnt like eating out of the bottle so I feel I am in a corner.

Take out dairy from your diet. It might help.

My son had the same thing happening around that age. I talked to a lactation consultant and she suggested a bland diet, and it was exactly what we needed. Now at 10 months old he has no problems with what I eat. Talk to your Dr, or a lactation consultant.

Oooo, yea, that is good advice as well. I've heard dairy can do that too.

As far as a Bland diet. I have thought about it and I think I will start one. What kind of things did you eat that would be good in a bland diet? Although I love Dairy products if I have to I will stop for her.

my kids have all been "happy spitters" so basically I've been constantly puked on for the past 8 years...But they did go through a period from about 2 weeks to 4 weeks of age where they were just miserable, and the LC told us that it was normal because they were getting more breastmilk at this time but still hadn't developed all the bacteria in their gut yet to make digestion really smooth yet.

And all of them did get better between 4-6 weeks, although they still (at almost 8 months) spit up all the time.

Dietchanges havenever really done anything for my kids...And that's something that my LC also said would really rarely have an effect on them. She said there are some proteins in nuts, and some in dairy that can get into your milk, but aside from those and caffeine, diet doesn't usually effect them.

Don't feel insecure though, because if she does have a sensitive tummy, formula would be even harder on it, you are doing what's best for her!

Thank you for you help. As a new mom I worry which, of course, is typical. I just dont like her being sick. I am just trying to find a way of making her be okay and feel better after each feeding. So do you think if I cut out dairy it would help because I know you had mentioned about some protiens in dairy. Hopefully this will pass as her stomach gets stronger but in the meantime I need to find a way to make it work for both of us till we get to that point.

Sorry, I know it may have seemed like a stupid question, but you wouldn't believe the amount of people I've come across that thought breastfed babies didn't need to be burped.

My LO has a milk protein allergy, but spitting up has never been one of his symptoms. You can try eliminating dairy (just remember it can take up to a week for it to fully get out of our system) and see of it helps. You can also ask you doctor about acid reflux. I think your LO is likely spitting up because of an immature sphincter between the esophagus and stomach which is completely normal in newborns. Spit up looks like a lot more than it really is.

I didnt think that was a stupid question.   My husband and I thought at first that was what it was as well. I think I am going to talk to the doctor tomorrow and eliminate dairy. Hopefully something will help.

You could try that, but you might end up off dairy for a long time for no reason! It takes two weeks for all the dairy proteins to be out of your milk, and by then she'll probably be more comfortable anyway. Does she have any other signs of dairy allergy?

I think it is probably normal spitting up. I would let her sleep semi upright and keep her semi upright and not jostled after you finish burping her, and see if that helps.
