Should Latin Be Taught in Schools?

Should Latin Be Taught in Schools?

posted 1st Nov
A little background before voting:
Latin is NOT dead language. It is prominent in our english language.
I learned Latin through my uncle. He is a school administrator and believes in this strongly.
Examples of how it helps (my personal to name a few):
> I had a near perfect SAT score in english, because I was able to understand a word I have NEVER seen before as I understood the Latin root, suffix, and prefixes.
> It helped me fly through medical transcribing courses as I understood the Latin basis in the medical terminology.
> This also applies to foreign languages as well as english. I found spanish and french easy to pick up on, because of my understanding of Latin.

Other school systems are learning Latin in foreign countries
Example: France:
They learn English, German, Spanish, and Latin in elementary school

Latin was an option at our high school. I took the course.

I took Latin all four years in high school, and it helped me both on my SAT's but also when I took APAnatomyand Biology. And it was fun to know something not a lot of people know.

My husband took Latin in high school and he's ALWAYS telling me about how certain words came to be from Latin. He got Summa Cum Laude in the national exam.

Yeah my hs does not offer it. I know some do for high schools. But children are sponges! I wish I learned it young!

The only basics we had were Spanish, French, and German. Now that I'm in college my university offers freakin' Russian, Japanese, Chinese, and Italian!

I wish I had been one of those child prodigies who learned different languages when younger. Ah, to be multilingual...

Right now it's English with a concentration on writing & linguistics, but I've been thinking I want to change my major to Psychology. Hbu? Are you in school?

I was a psych major but changed it to a less competitive field: management/accounting. Also, because I knew that I would need at least a masters for a decent job in psychology.

I read an article that the best employment rate (for the past 30 years) was for someone that had a master's in english.

I just have to add that you can mix and match. Like you can have a bachelor's in biology and have a master's in something totally opposite like psychology (with maybe taking an extra semester at a community college for the prerequisites....) Best advice I EVER got from a counselor. And, with a masters, you have the ability to be a college professor.

I took Latin all four years in hs and then a year in college. I always thought it was great. I'm able to figure out meaning of words and it's cool knowing the origin of them. I got to the point where I could read it very quickly from sight, but I don't know how well I'd do now.

lol that is very true. I think I forgot a lot. That is another reason why I wish this would be taught through elementary school to college (or hs, depending how far your education goes). I'm sure it would've "stuck" better. I really think this should be a change in our school systems
