Procardia?

posted 1st Nov
Anyone ever been on this or on it currently for pre-term labor?
I was previously on Terbutaline but they switched me to Procardia recently. I am supposed to take it every 4-6 hours but I find it wearing off after about 3 hours and I have to take another dose.
Now I just took one an hour ago and it is already wearing off, and I am having painful contractions. The Dr. told me if one dose isn't working, I can take two at once.
But I am hesitating to do that because I am home alone and it will make my blood pressure go really low if I take another one and I don't want to pass out.
Does this medicine eventually just stop working? Whats the deal?

oh and it gave me very bad heart palps - and i the dose does need to be changed if its not working - try cutting one in half if you dont want to take 2 and i wouild DEF reccomend someone being with you cause it will def lower your blood pressure very quick - took about 10 minutes and mine went down -

We was actually on both Procardia and Brethine at the same time. I was told that I could go a max of 20mg of Procardia in 4 hrs AND take the Brethine too. If I was maxed out on that and had more than 4 contractions an hour....they told me to go to the hospital.
I was in the prenatal ICU on Magnesium Sulfate for awhile too.

The longer i was on it, the less it seemed to work.

Good luck momma!!

i think its less about it wearing off as it is that they can only do so much to stop mother nature.....
if they told you you can take 2, go for it if you need to- just have someone call you in 20 min, then 40 min, etc, so if you have issues, and dont answer the phone, they can call you help

Crap! I still have my Terbutaline but I hate that shit. I have only been on Procardia for like 2 days and it's already not working
Did you deliver early?

The nurse at L&D told me that eventually all these meds to stop labor just stop working and there's nothing they can do.
I want so badly to make it to at least 36 weeks but I don't think it's gonna happen

When I was "maxed" out on meds, I felt like I was a crackhead. I was all jittery and stupid. My contractions started at 17 weeks (I just thought they were bh) and by 30 weeks I was dilating.

I had an appt at 38w, 1d and was 5cm dilated so they sent me to L&D and broke my water. He was only 13 days early and was perfect.

they told me the same thing. Hang in there sweetie...just take it one day at a time, it seems more achievable that way. How far are you now?

I am crying now. I hate my body, I had the same issues when I was pregnant with my son. Why can't I just be like normal people and have a normal pregnancy I can enjoy?
I am 33 weeks 1 day.

That is really great that your daughter did so well. The nurse told me if I were to deliver her this week, some 33 weekers breathe room air and some are on oxygen.
I think if I end up in L&D again they will give me the steroid shots for her lungs. They gave me the shots at 34 weeks when I was pregnant with my son for the same thing.

I feel for you....I was the same way. When I was 33 weeks, I was in the PICU and they had me tour the NICU and prepared me for what could happen. I was scared to death.

This may sound silly but I found that my contractions were worse if my bladder was full....so I peed every single time I walked past the bathroom, whether I had to pee or not. I really increased my water intake too and that helped.

I would ask for steroids just to be safe. Have they given you a fetal fibronectin test?

I have a Dr.'s appt tomorrow morning, I am definately bringing up the steroid shots. No they haven't given me an FFN, nor have I been checked for dilation since 25 weeks when I fell.
Do you think if I ask the Dr. to check me he will? I kinda want to know either way.
