Play with the lighting a little bit more. My bestfriend took some photog. and everytime we'd take pictures, she was so OCD about lighting. She always got great scores for her lighting! Try different angles too

Photography is very very hard to get into. I have friends who went to college for it and don't even use their degree or they changed majors. So many people do it these days and very few can make a living off of it. It has always been a hobby of mine and I thought of making it a career. You make most of your money off of weddings, but nowadays people can't afford as much, and there are TONS of wedding photographers. To compete you'll need extensive equipment - a professional dSLR, all kinds of lenses, a flash system, and accesories and you'll usually want a 2nd batch of equipment because ANYTHING can go wrong, so it gets to be expensive and an investment. I just recently got my second professional camera after working for 2 years, which cost over $1,000 and I have spent more on my lenses/etc and I still need more things. I also bought a laptop and got up to date software for photo editing (I use Photoshop CS4 & Aperture 2).

And I don't do too many weddings, just smaller things like family portraits which is generally not a big money maker. And you'll definitely need to take classes to understand what to do to achieve great photos which can cost even more. I have been slowly working to get what I need and I don't have high hopes of it being a huge career anymore, just something for fun and on the side.

I also know a handful of people who have degrees in photography and are very good, but are still finding it next to impossible to find a job. This doesn't mean you couldn't make a career out of it, of course. I see job postings for photographers at those child photography places and such quite often. Many people who get into photography don't really have that in mind as their dream career, unfortunately. I know someone who started his own photography business and is actually doing very well. I think this happens pretty rarely though. I think for most people it's a good part-time job or something to possibly make a little money on the side. You'll definitely have to invest in classes. You'll learn a lot there, and possibly make some connections. You'll also have to invest in all of the proper equipment. Then when you're ready to get yourself out there, you'll really need to advertise and promote yourself anyway you can. Like Corrine said, there are so many photographers out there these days, so you have to make yourself stand out.
My advice is that if you want to get into photography mainly as a way to make money, look elsewhere. If you want to get into it because it's something you enjoy and you're willing to take the risk, then go for it.
Sorry, I'm terrible at thinking of names, so I won't even try!

Go for it! Dont let the other posts on here scare you off from something you want to do. I just started my photography business & I didn't need any classes to prepare me, photography is an art. You CAN self teach yourself. The few classes I have taken were a joke and I already knew all I was taught by self teaching myself through online ebooks/tutorials and a group on Cafemom called Photo Moms. It is AMAZING, you can learn SO much through them. Its for beginners to pros. There are a handful of professionals who run it and have challenges, tutorials, offer CC, and so so so much more.

No one is trying to scare her off. I'd definitely go for it, just letting her know if she is real serious about it that it's really an investment.

Yes, exactly. Photography is a huge investment and its something that takes time to grow on. Appreciation for photos leads to better photo taking, and its a huge social business. It's also a diverse business that requires long hours of thought and devotion!

GOOD LUCK!
