Picking out engagement rings (poll)

posted 31st Oct
Okay so my sister and I have this hobby of looking at engagement rings. My friend used to do it with us too until she got married lol. But anyway we always look and pick out things we like, thinking that one day each of our SOs will ask what kind to get. My older sister's husband asked my mom before he proposed and she had him get something that SHE liked, and my sister hates it   My friend's husband asked me what to get and I gave him some ideas and she LOVES hers. So we are going the same direction. I've known some girls who picked out their actual ring and then had their SO surprise them with it. So what do you girls think? SO should pick it out with no help, your friends/family should give advice, or you want to pick it out yourself? If you're already engaged/married, what was your situation?

As a side note, I know the ring is a symbol of love and shouldn't be a big deal, but you DO have to (theoretically and hopefully) wear it for the rest of your life so you should at least like it! lol and this is just for funsies

Shawn is letting me pick out ones I like. He's either getting one of those or something similar.

This is awesome! haha because Me & My SO are doing that right now! Well, I'm looking and we've been ring shopping and I told him which one I want & now whenever he's ready he's going to ask me and surprise me with it. I think it's awesome that I got to pick only because now I know that a ring that will always be on my finger, I will always like because I got to pick it. But I also told my SO that I defintely wouldn't mind if he picked it out his own because it's about being engaged to him, and knowing we'll always be together etc etc, and I'd probably be happy with whatever he got me. But I like the way we are doing it. Because I've always envisioned the ring I've wanted and now, within the next couple of months or whenever he asks me I'll get to have it AND be engaged to the love of my life!!

Sorry if that is kind of confusing! haha. I think it all makes sense!

I have no idea when he will ever propose (i'm in no rush) but I figured I'd start early and sometimes when I'm really bored I look at rings & show him which ones I like and which ones are a big no no. That way he is getting a ballpark idea and hopefully can pick out on that I love.. one day. Ha ha!

I showed him some examples of what I didn't like, but he already knew what he was going to get me anyways. I am a classic type of girl, so he knew not to go with something too trendy or unique. He knew I didn't want a three stone; that I liked a plain solitaire. He knew I like white gold or platinum, not yellow because of the jewelry I already owned.

My husband asked my opinion but wanted to pick it out on his own. We went to shops and things to lookso he had an idea of what I liked. But his mom ended up handing down her engagment ring set. I still wear one rung, but we are taking the diamonds out of the other and setting it in our own design.

we had obviously went and looked at rings and i showed him some i liked but when it came down to it he actually picked it out on his own and it was one i had never seen and i love it! the only thing he really remembered is i liked princess cuts and he told them that and then chose from there but he said he was really picky. i think its more special that way when they choose it. oh and he also knew i wanted white gold too.

I refused to go with Randy when he picked mine out. He asked me a time or two to go look at them but I told him I wanted him to chose it b/c it was coming form him and he should know me and my taste well enough if he wants to marry me..he did a really good job   it's nothing big or fancy(like me  ) and I love it

wen my sister got engagedshe picked out her ring and shes always told me that it just felt like a ring to her and nothing special b/c yeah it came from her hubbys money but not his heart. but those are just our oppinions lol

What happened with my husband and I doesn't really fit into any of the poll options. Hubby and I went to a few jewelry stores together throughout our dating when we knew we were getting married at some point. We looked at some, and I gave him an idea of what I liked. When he decided he was going to actually propose, he picked out the ring on his own. I liked it that way because I was surprised, but he also had an idea of what I liked. I LOVE my ring. He did an awesome job.

Has anyone ever gotten a vintage ring? Like not passed down in your family, but actually bought one from like a used jewelry place? I was thinking about looking there, bc I really like some of the vintage pear shaped rings. Its hard to find pear shaped engagement rings lately that aren't super expensive lol. Do you think that it is bad luck? lol

i personally wouldnt want a used engagment ring unless it was passed down threw familys lol i would think it was bad luck for some reason.. hehe maybe the guy was cheating on the girl so she ended the engagement and pawned the ring! lol id either like it to be new or know the story behind it but thats just me.

Mine isn't vintage, but I wouldn't see it as being bad luck if it was.I think alot of diamonds that you buy at regular stores were used or traded in to begin with. They're just in new seetings. I don't believe in any of that bad luck stuff. A marriage is what YOU make it. I doubt your marriage would be affected because you have a ring from someone who may have had a bad marriage. That's just how I look at it.
