Any BG Mommies out there with Autistic kids?

posted 30th Oct
I feel alone in this. I've been told by Drs that my son is Autistic (well, they *really* think he is) and my SO and I goNovember 2ndto talk with the Psychologists about Hunter and then they will have an appt for him to be evaluated.Where does your child fall under the spectrum? And how are they doing now prior to when you first found out?

My son isn't autistic, but my mom and step mom are both teach autistic kids at elemantry schools. It's definitely a different life, but it can very well be a very fulfilling life. You will be a stronger mama because of it, that must be a hard thing to take in... If you have any questions or anything let me know and I'll ask my moms for you   I know your doctor could answer for you better than some random girls moms could, but still.

Jamil was diagnosed at 20 months.. We had concerns from much earlier and even went through an evual at 16 months, which he passed... I didn't believe it at first, I knew he had some social issues, and I felt therapy could help him, but now I can see more signs... I worked with kids on the spectrum for 7 years... Some you would never know....

Jamil has classic autism meaning he had the 6 markers needed, he is very high functioning, and very smart...

At the time of diagnosis he had 5 words and could not request at all he had never told us he was hungry.. Never pointed to a tree or a bird...

Now he has over 500 words can use long sentances including please snd thank you, he has the most infectious smile...

His eye contact has never been the the greatest, i've heard it's hard for people on the spectrum to listen or focus while making eye contact so they avoid it...
But he has made progress, we just had a review of goals and he met them all within 3 months.. And were working on new ones..

The hardest thing is just simple conversations, but with more hard work and detirmination I know well get there

I know how hard this is, but honestly knowing know is the best thing that ever could have happened...

There are great success rates!!
What's your son like? Does he have sensory issues? Have you seen an Ot?

He's actually smart in his own little way but you can tell that he might be on the spectrum because if you were to put him beside a neurotypical, he's not doing things that he should be doing.
Yes, he has sensory issues. He's supposed to see an OT but the OT that is from the Early Intervention program doesn't come out this far (go figure)...
He's got ST but I don't see it helping a bit mainly because he hardly ever pays her the slightest attention.

Jamil didn't make any significant gains in speech until he started OT.. Then it was almost immediate.. Can you travel to the OT?

Not really becausethe OT isalways out of her office going to other children's homes. She doesn't come out this far because he is the only child out this way. The ST has a few children that are towards our way that's why she comes out. Hopefully when he gets *officially diagnosed* he'll get more help with his needs and everything. I've actually heard thatABA works amazingly. Have you tried that? If so, did it work or not so much?

I have seen aba fail very few children in my years of working with kids.. I use it in my teaching methods and yes it's wonderful

With this age group I think play therapy works wonders too...

My only problem with many schools programs is inability to think outside the box... You have to really check out the available services with your childs needs..

We tried a school and at 20months I couldn't handle it.. So were in a less intense program now I'm second guessing my choice butbits been almost 6 months and his needs are different... He is making huge gains but there is the nagging what if
