Carnation Milk for Infants

posted 30th Oct '09
I know back in the day and (very rarely) sometimes still infants were given the canned Carnation milk mixed with Karo syrup and something else (I forget what else, if anybody knows feel free to tell me because it's driving me nuts).

I was just thinking about it and wondering why the smurf they put corn syrup in it. Was it just to sweeten it? Or was there some nutritional reason it was added? If anybody knows, please tell me because I'm curious LOL.

What my grandma told me (she formula fed all five of her children back in the sixties) is that before science kicked in and told otherwise, they added karo syrup to up the calorie value. They thought it was the sugar value the babies needed, not the fats and fatty acids which we now know is much more important than the sugar.

No I'm not talking about that. There was a time when babies were fed ONLY carnation and karo. No formula, no breastmilk, that's just what they were fed period.

And I've heard of karo syrup in the bottle for constipation, but not the carnation milk? I personally never gave my LO karo in her bottle. Karo's website themselves says they can't guarantee that there aren't botulism spores in it and they don't personally endorse or recommend it for infants.

Thats all anyone really used here or still uses here....including myself! I dont have the exact recipe at hand but we don't use corn syrup in it! It's milk, water and sugar until 6 months and then just milk and water! Both my kids are healthy

The corn syrup was added to make the babies drink it.

That's what I was wondering. Because from my understanding, evaporated milk is sweet to begin with so I just don't understand why they would have been adding that to sweeten it further.

Some years ago, it was common to feed babies a homemade formula that consisted of a mixture of evaporated milk, water, and sugar (or corn syrup). This turned out to be a dangerous approach for many reasons. First, the mix was found to cause iron-deficiency anemia because of intestinal bleeding and its low iron content. Experts also learned that the higher amount of protein and minerals force an infant's maturing kidneys to work harder and that the fat is difficult for babies to digest. In addition, the mix has low levels of vitamins C, A, and D unless the milk used is fortified; and using corn syrup increases the risk of infantile botulism, since it often contains botulism spores.

For all of these reasons, evaporated-milk formula is not recommended for babies. If you must use it because other formulas are beyond your budget, be sure to give your baby a supplement that includes vitamin C and iron. And keep in mind that A and D vitamin supplements, as well as fluoride, may also have to be given.

My girlfriends baby is allergic to all formulas even the ones that her doctor put him on. finally when baby went down to 4 pounds from 8 her grandma came over and switched the baby to the canned milk. for a 4 ounce bottle its one ounce of canned milk a half of tsp of corn syrup and 3 ounces of water. dont forget if you do feed with this you will need to have baby on vitamin drops.
