Soft breasts after 3 weeks of bfing

posted 30th Oct
So I've been bfing my babygirl and it's been 3 weeks now.. But when my milk came in my breasts were SO big! Then about 5-6 days later they were like back to pregnancy size. Now they're like smaller n they feel soft and empty all the time so it's hard to gauge how much she's getting since they don't seem to get full again between feedings.. What happened? Did I dry up? When I pump I get 1-5 ounces depending on the length between feedings but my boobs don't seem to e as full n firm as try were. I can to 8 hours without becoming engorged as well, in the first week if I went longer than 3 I was hurting and huge! Any input?

its pretty normal, i was full for awhile..but now i think im soft all the time!!.. u still have enough milk IF you a drinking enough water, make sure to try to drink the 8 cups a day of water, if u fall under then u will produce more but they say if u drink over it has not shown that u will produce any MORE, its just if ur dehydrated u wont produce as much

same thing with me.. my breast are soft now but there is still enough milk. ive been feedin for 9 weeks and your breast regulate the milk IDK exactly what that means but thats what my doctor said... as long as your LO seems like they are getting enough then your fine.. and if your worried get some milk busting things such as a certian tye of tea and cookies (not sure of names)

I don't recommend waiting 8 hours inbetween feedings. I don't know how you could unless you give her what you pumped. You milk hasn't regulated so it's best to keep putting her to the breast. It is normal to be full and then to be "limp" or feeling not as full.

I've been BFing for 7 months, and they're smaller than they were pre-pregnancy.

If you're worried about supply, feed or pump more, but size doesn't indicate supply.

wet diapers are your best indicator. Once your body has regulated and only produces the right amount for your baby you do feel dry/empty - but you aren't.

Back when you were huge and hurting, your boobs were engorged. Your milk hadnt regulated yet so your body would just keep making it constantly until you let it out. Now your supply is regulating, so your body is learning to make just enough to meet your babies needs, so you wont have that "full" feeling anymore but it does NOT mean you dried up. As long as your baby is still growing and producing enough wet diapers, then you know they are getting enough.

And as far as all the responses about you being able to go 8 hours, Im assuming that 8 hrs is at night? If your baby is naturally sleeping that long, then dont worry about it, its perfectly ok to let her sleep. And I wouldnt wake up to pump either, because if your daughter IS going to sleep those 8 hrs every night regularly, then its ok for your body to learn that habit. If you wake up to pump, your body is going to think it needs to produce enough milk to cover that every night. So just nurse her when she is hungry, let her sleep if she is asleep, and only pump if you want to build a supply in the freezer.

mothers milk tea works great..you just drink like 5 cups a day. My doctor told me to make sure I was getting around 3000 calories a day and it would help alot.

Well said. I asked this same question (my milk is letting down as I type since I'm thinking about BF'ing, lol) when this happened to my breasts. They got so soft compared to when my milk first came in, but now I can tell the difference between when they are full and when they are almost completely empty. Even when they are full they are not completely firm.
Don't worry, just remember to stay hydrated!
