Preemie weight question

posted 30th Oct
My son was born at 29 weeks, he will be 8 months on November 1st (5 1/2 months corrected). He only weighs 15 lbs, which puts him in between the 10th and 25th percentile for his weight. He is doing great with length, he is 26 1/2 " so he is between the 50th and 75th percentile for that. I was just wondering how other preemies are doing, I know every baby is different, though. I'm just concerned he may not be eating enough. He was on pumped breastmilk for 6 months, and then I just started him on soy formula (he refused milk based) about 2 months ago. He only eats between 20-24oz a day, and sometimes he'll eat maybe 2 table spoons of baby food for "dinner" (he doesn't seem too interested in baby food yet, so i'm not really pushing it). Do you think this is enough? He was supposed to go for a weight check at the begining of next month, but my pedi is out on medical leave so I may have to find a new pedi if she doesn't come back soon. He also has a f/u appt with the NICU clinic december 1st, so I plan on asking about them about all this at that time as well. I just wanted some feed back from you ladies! Thanks for your help!

My daughter was a preemie and as long as she was healthy, her ped wasn't worried much about her weight. She only weighed 16lbs at a yr old and now shes 2yrs old and weighs 22lbs. She just now made it onto the precentile chart and shes only in the 5% precent. Dont stress about it, his weight seems good to me

What about the amount of food he eats everyday? Is 20 -24 oz normal or average you think??

My son was born at 36 weeks and when he was born weight 6.3 lb he stayed 5 days in the hospital because he did not want it to eat, now he is 7 1/2 and weight 16lb.

My son was born at 33 weeks by 1 year he only weighed 16 lbs...he is nearly 4, will be 4 on January 8th..and only weighs 25 lbs now..his baby brother who is 16 months younger than him weighs 30 lbs lol...My son has colitis though do to his prematurity so he will never be a fat kid or person..Now my daughter on the other hand..she was not a premi, was born at 8lbs 5 oz and is 8 months old and still only weighs 15lbs..we dont have any clue as to why she wont gain cause she was term and all tests show nothing..so she is classified as FTT

You ladies are making me feel so much better! The only other baby I really have to compare to is my nephew, who will be a year next month...and he is HUGE! He is a little butter ball and has been ever since he was born so I have no idea what is "normal". Thanks ladies!

I hate when people ask me how old my son is, cuz I have to go through the whole "well he is this old, but he was this early, so he is really this old..." lol such a drawn out answer!

I know but you feel like you have to give them that answer or they are going to judge you for them being so small..at least with my son i could say he was a premi and ppl are like ohhh okay yeah..but with my daughter i have no reason really why she is so small..so i feel like ppl think i am neglecting her or something..ppl always tell me i should let her CIO now that she is 8 months when i say she is still getting up to eat at night..its like ummm no she needs the extra calories lol..

Sounds like Kamari is pretty "average" so to speak then. I feel a lot better now!

My daughter was born at 28 weeks weighing 2lbs 2.5oz. She was about 15-16lbs at 8 months. Now at 15 months she is 21lbs. I think your LO is growing great!! About the whole eating situation. He will not starve himself. If he is hungry, he will let you know mama!!
