Blanket/swaddle question.

posted 30th Oct
I kno that babies love to be swaddled but i also know that your not supposed to put them to bed with a blanket.. is that considered a blanket? or is it ok to lay them down to sleep when they are swaddled up.. i feel like this is a retarded question, forgive me.

i always swaddled my baby to sleep, i don't think it's safe once they can get out of the swaddle themselves though

Swaddling is fine when they are newborns and do not move around alot. The blanket should stay swaddled. Once they are more active, I would not swaddle anymore

They put my daughter to bed swaddled in the hopsital so I would assume its fine. Once we got home she hated it though so it didn't last long.

It's a bit different when you swaddle.....

Laying a loose blanket on them is bad because they can scrunch it up against their face, which can cause trouble breathing.

Swaddling them, keeps the blanket nice and tight around their body.

I don't remember, it's been 5 years now...
But I don't really remember swaddling my son when he went to bed. I always put him in warm footsie jammies, mittens, and a hat, and he slept like that.

No, its not considered the same thing. Dont put them to bed with LOOSE blankets. A swaddle (especially the velcro ones) are perfectly safe and VERY helpful.

as long as you dont put them to bed with a loose blanket you should be fine. I always swaddled mine and layed them down to sleep.

Drew hated to be swaddled. In the hospital the nurses kept swaddling him and he was not a happy camper. He would squirm and kick until he finally got it off and then he'd be happy. As for sleeping with swaddling, it's fine.

Thank you, I didnt kno so many little ones didnt like it;. I bought a few of the sleep sack things and the swaddle blankets with Velcro so we will see if she likes them. But it makes sence the not putting a loose blanket in there.

I have to swaddle Lucy before she goes to bed at night, other wise she stirs, scratches at her face and wakes herself up. She loves being swaddled though. Swaddling calms her down alot.

You're right that you should never put your baby to bed with a loose blanket - it's really dangerous. I was always terrified of my swaddle coming undone so I never swaddled my baby in a loose blanket. Instead, I used the Halo SleepSack Swaddle product. It's a wearable blanket and is much safer than swaddling with a loose blanket. You can buy them at Babies R Us or go to the HaloSleep.com website.
