Breastfeeding in public

posted 30th Oct
A friend posted this on Facebook after she took a poll.

I think this is a matter of decency. I mean, that can be looked at as a form of public nudity ya know? Anyone else who whips out their breasts would be fined but it's okay for mommy over there because she's feeding her baby? It's not that hard to cover up with a blanket or go somewhere private.

Then a friend of hers posted:
Yeah, but that's like saying oh, we don't like to see fat people wearing tight shirts, so pregnant women shouldn't wear form-fitting outfits where we can see their bellies. Breastfeeding is a very natural thing and should be embraced, not shunned. And going somewhere "private" is harder than you think--if you're in a mall or restaurant, some ... Read Moreplaces will ask you to go to the bathroom, which is unsanitary. Would you eat your dinner in a bathroom because a vegetarian didn't like the look of your steak? Nursing women shouldn't have to give up normal life because they have a hungry baby. Although I personally, if I had kids, would use a blanket to respect the sensitivities of others, it shouldn't be forced--you can see a lot worse things on cable TV or the nightly news,
than you can from a woman breastfeeding a baby.

Then she posted:
I understand both sides here. There's some pretty interesting debates going on in the comment section of this poll so I'm getting plenty of arguments either way. As I said, I just think it's a matter of decency. I personally would probably lose my appetite at a restaurant if I saw a woman breastfeed her child at the table because she didn't want to... Read More go to the bathroom or didn't have a blanket. I just think that women should have a blanket for their hungry baby, or if you think that's uncomfortable for the baby they have ways you can prepare breast milk to put in a bottle for trips or what have you.

Then I posted:
Here's my issue with that...do you eat with a blanket over your head? And to your point of putting breast milk in a bottle, some infants won't latch onto a bottle and when they do they may have issues switching from bottle to breast. In our culture breasts are very sexualized when in reality, they are there for one purpose and that is to feed a ... Read Morebaby. Most times when a woman is feeding her baby you can't even tell what they're doing. I've sat with a friend in the middle of Montgomery Mall while she breastfed and no one looked twice.

What are your thoughts on this?

people can effe themselves. i bf my son wherever the hell i want to. .this summer w/ it being 5786786876879 degrees, he would not bf under a blanket/nursing cover bc he would sweat way too much. he refuses to take a bottle of bm or formula, even. i just wear 2 shirts - one i pull up the other i keep down so im not exposed.
& true, if i turn on the tv, im guaranteed to see more boob.

I personally think you should cover up or go into a place where no one is around. I would say something to someone if the breastfed infront of me. I don't want to see some ladys boob.

I don't understand her friend's response, because being overweight and wearing tight clothes has nothing to do with breastfeeding in public. I agree 100% with your point; breasts have become very sexualized, when their sole purpose is to feed and nourish a baby. I personally would not breastfeed my baby in public, because I wouldn't be comfortable with it, but if a woman is comfortable with it, more power to her. If a baby is hungry it isn't right to make him/her wait for her food just because there are people around. As far as putting breastmilk in a bottle, I wouldn't do it either. I won't feed my daughter with a bottle. I don't see a reason to. Other people will have to when I go back to work, but I'm not going to confuse her.

I think people who have an issue are ignorant. In fact I breastfeed Harlow everywhere. At the table, in the grocery, at the playground, walking around the amusement park, waterpark, pool, front porch, you name it. Dont like it? Look somewhere else and get over yourself. Im not going to "hide" to make YOU comfortable because in all reality, I dont care if it makes you sick.

I've found that when I am breastfeeding in front of people my daughter gets angry if I cover her face, because she starts to sweat. That isn't fair to the baby.

Plus, when I tried one time to cover Harlows head, she thrashed around tore the blanket off and cried, wouldnt latch. MUCH more of a show than me bfing her like this at the waterpark in the *gasp* open daylight viewing area in the KIDDIE area ;)

Harlow sweats, cries, and thrashes. She freaks out when I attempted to put a blanket over her head. And the bathroom ?? NEVER. I mean, they dont even have a TOILET LID! So in the meantime, the baby is screaming as I sit on the nasty toilet adn my toddlers are playing in the tampon box......not going to happen haha.
