re: Breastfeeding in public

My daughters are girls so then they can breastfeed forever right? Because we have the same body parts? And the last time I checked, knowing where a penis is has nothing to do with breastfeeding???

Genitals arent even involved in breastfeeding for crying out loud.

Your LO is so freaking cute. I want to smile every time I scroll past the picture.

This is making me want to EBF - my goal now is 1 year. I've had a ton of trouble getting this far (my LO is 5 months on the 7th) but I'd like to try for much longer b/c of all the benefits.
I'll have a super smart lil boy

Yay good for you!

The first month and a half were awful for us. It was the worst time ever. But now all is grand and we plan to go to at least 2!

you know, i know a lot about the straight-out benefits of breastfeeding, but never framed it in a timeline-- i figured i'd just let max define it as that's the core tenant of much of my parenting a pre-lingual baby.

for me, i was just going to do it for six months, then a year, then two years...

i'm still at 19 months, so i've got time, but now-- as a slightly experienced breastfeeder, i cannot for the life of me imagine how it became something that women denied their children and themselves-- as was so common in the past half-century w/ the marketing of formula-- and even earlier w/ wet nurses...

it is a remarkable and loving little bond of complete trust-- it's not super easy at the beginning, but that's just the necessary learning curve.

still--if you know it's tough going in, you'll be much more able to soldier through till you establish a supply and define your feeding times-- which is some time after infancy.

one thing that has recently changed quite nicely, is my ability to tell him "no beebee b/c beebee is for bedtime" he completely understands now and accepts my distractions/imitations amiably enough.

all that to say, before i had to think about breastfeeding three years or more sounded "weird" to me, but didn't really upset me or "disgust me", now i can see how it could easily end up a drawn out ritualized form of mother-child comfort w/out any sexual overtone whatsoever.

i don't think i'll be doing that, but then again-- i didn't think i'd make it this long, so who really knows!

I think that people need to either get over seeing a woman breastfeeding her baby or make a nice area for it.
I breastfeed my daughter and I've gotten the most disgusting looks from feeding her and I wasn't even doing it around anyone..I went to the bathroom and put down a blanket and stayed in there. (I felt like a hobo but I figured I'd get dirtier looks outside). It's completely natural and it saves money lol. I do it at my house in my living room and nobody has ever noticed me doing it. (I live with my family still). I don't understand why people are so disturbed by it.

My LO does too and she pushes it off of her head.

honestly, i prefered to do it in a place where i could be in private. even though it's a perfectly natural thing, so is sex... and i wouldnt do that in public.

i feel like especially with small children around where i may be feeding a child, it may be a conversation someone may not be ready to have with their children.

it really does suck that society has sexualized breasts so much that it does make people uncomfortable. we, as moms may understand, but there are others who may not.

i believe that there is a way to make babies, moms, and other people comfortable.

I think thats overly naive IMHO. There isnt always going to be a way to make EVERYONE comfortable.

well if the situation fits, then i believe a woman should do everything she can... maybe if she's in the food court in a mall, maybe a respectable thing would be to move to a bench that is in a less crowded part of the mall, etc.

it's not ALWAYS going to be feasable, you're correct. however, i believe a woman should do all she can to respect others around her.
