My son did that when he got frustrated. He would throw his head into the ground. I think its because they are more hands on or tactile.
I had to teach my son to take his frustrations out on a non-living object like a pillow..something he couldnt hurt himself on.It worked for us.

how are his other developments going? does he speak well and have a good vocabulary? is he friendly to people that arefamiliarto him? is he affectionate with you?

harming himself can be a sign of autism. but no offence, it could also be a sign of oppositional defiant disorder or just a really spoiled kid. you should discuss it with his doctor

i just want to say..that they thought my son had autism too. He doesnt he has really bad adhd..
but he is incredibly smart..
he also had a speech delay..but hes very smart in math and can speak really well now.

i understand wanting to help a child..but there are so many doctors that are so quick to say "autism"
Thats not acceptable in my opinion. some kids are just different.

sort of an extreme form of having a bad temper.

as long as his communication skills are on target (friendly, affectionate, typical vocabulary, making eye contact) you don't need to be worried about autism. self harm is sort of a secondary sign bc all of them don't do it. you'd always want to look for the primary signs first.

as another mom said, a.d.d. is also another possibility. but it is extremely over diagnosed, and the medication for it can cause more problems for children that don't need it. i have a.d.d. but i have managed mine with behavioral and cognitive therapy. I'm a psychology major lol

Some kids just don't know how to deal with or show frustration. Try spending some time teaching him how to use his words to show he's angry (in a productive way obviously). It's a good sign he's hurting himself and not others at least. I would see what you can do to help him learn before thinking something is wrong. Remember he's still little and figuring out his emotions. Good luck.
