Foreign names anyone?

posted 29th Oct
Hey ladies...anyone name their children something foreign? Im naming my daughter Reveille-which is a derivative of the french word meaning to *wake up* -not to be confused with the military term. It is pronounced *rev-ay* I just wondered if anyone else had any unique foreign names for their children and what they mean? I know im not alone here!

I have a unique name that's Ancient Hungarian.

I got the worst teasing in the world for it when I was a teenager.. to the point I introduced myself to everyone with my middle name.

I'm pretty sure most people name their kids something foreign considering most words we know come from a different place originally.

Unless you live in a largely French area, her name is never going to be pronounced correctly.

Why not use it as a middle name?

OOhh Kalith is pretty i think!

I did think of the fact that no one will pronounce the name correctly....but you see my hubby and i both took years of french in school and are planning to move to france at some point.....and we just adore french names....I am planning on homeschooling my children most likely, so im thinking the teasing and such wont be as big a problem.

But we will see.....Im having this baby on dec. 1 or before, due to needing a c-section, so ive got one more month to think on it, though my mind is pretty made up lol.

I think it could be a nice middle name. Even though, I also thought it would be pronounced how the ladies above me have said so. But maybe you're changing the pronounciation on purpose?

Also, it reminds me of revile, and that's not cool.

I adore foreign NAMES....not random words from other languages morphed into "names". I love anything that has a wonderful history and meaning behind it and is on the correct gender. I love everything from Kalila to Elspeth to Kerensa to Hitomi.

You girlsmay beright on the pronunciation....itmight berev- eye......hmm lord i should know that i took 7 years of french and have been there too!! thanks for pointing that out! I took the name from the verb reveiller, but i didnt want to go with that, so i took it to reveille....i did look at this spelling and compare it to the french name Mireille, which is pronounced mir-ay, hence why i said it that way... i know that one is correct, from french teachers and such. But thanks for the input all!

I only thought that was pronounced as 'ravioli' for a while and it made me hungry. This is why I shouldn't read posts at 6am.
