Jacob's First week At School
posted 28th Oct
I haven't gotten a phone call from his teacher today, if she will call it probably won't be for a couple more hours and with how I'm feeling I better post this now.
Monday was Jacob's first day, and he was up and wanting to get on the bus at 5:30 am. So very frustrating, we couldn't get him back to bed until about 8 oclock and he had to get back up at 9:10 to get ready to catch the bus. He didn't even care about his normal morning routine and was ready to go by 9:30, 20 minutes before the bus came. He left his hat and gloves at school or on the bus, but he seemed to have a good day. The teacher called at 4 and said pretty much the same thing every other teacher has told me. But she had a lot of positives to say as well. He couldn't keep his hands to himself, so they practiced nice hands. He got excited easily and couldn't calm himself down. He enjoyed the "quiet corner" which was a corner filled with bean bag chairs when kids can scream and yell and flail around to calm down. Transitions were of course hard, but he liked her tactic of first she would count then flip the lights, then bang her tambourine. Circle time was difficult, even when he had something to play and hold on to. He often got up and walked around because he was bored, but always came back. He didn't want to do the art project, but eventually settled into it and finished his art project. He was very vocal and socialized well. He wouldn't go potty, but did agree to wash his hands.
I'm not sure how today went, but Jacob was again back up at 6 am ready to get moving and get dressed. It's hard because what seems to work is just being firm with him(which I know sometimes leads to a worse aspect), raising our voices a little and just being firm and telling him, "No you can't get up right now, you need to go back to sleep." and if we keep this up for a few minutes, then he'll start to cry, but I know when he starts to cry, that he's gotten the point and he'll go back to bed. I feel bad, but it works, and if I don't then he walks aimlessly around the house, and I may not of worded it correctly, but I do keep trying to remind him, "yes Jacob school is today. But not for a few more hours, please go back to sleep." He woke up again excited at 9:30 ready to go. Got dressed, brushed his teeth, and was ready for breakfast. He's NEVER done this, not in over a year, it was such a blessing! So maybe my firm loud voice is working????? Jacob usually always needs his bottle of milk and breakfast and tv before being able to get ready.
He got on the bus with no problems, but was upset because I refused to give him his hat and gloves.(I didn't want the new pair to get lost, I need to label them first) I remembered his lunch today as well. He came back in the same mood. He hugged the 2 other children on the bus and said good bye to every one. He said he had a few issues, that he had to go to time out and that he said some bad words on the bus. I found a cookie in his back pack and asked if they decorated cookies, and he told me they did. His back pack was also very heavy and upon further inspection, I found a small pumpkin. He was very happy and said, "That's MY pumpkin" So I'm sure today went just as well as the first.
I'm hoping for more good reports, and interested in seeing the speech therapists notes, and the occupational therapists notes as well when they see him. Jacob's obviously excited and enjoys this school, so I'm happy for him as well. I'm hoping it keeps up this way.

Aww. I'm so glad his first week went well. He sounds so much like Wesley. Wesley has the same problems at school. Can't seem to sit still, etc. I do love looking in his backpack when he gets home to see what he's done for the day! Firm voice works well with Wesley too. I'm sure Jacob's going to do just fine!
