We don't realise how good we have it...

posted 27th Oct
I have been watching a series of documentaries about child labour in various countries all over the world.
I watched one about young girls whose families sell them into slavery in Napal for as little as 13p a day, I think that would be the equivalent of about 30c in America. Today I am watching one about cocoa plantations in the Ivory Coast where children as young as 8 work for upto 12 hours a Day. It makes me feel so ungrateful for how lucky I was as a child in the UK to have the oppertunities of education I had and took for granted, all the homework assignemts I neglected because I had something "better" to do.. It makes me sad that these children do not get that chance when it is all they want. Many of the children harvesting have injuries from their machete. one small boy had half his thumb missing. And all of this they earn a mere pitance a day they probably earn less than the price of one of the chocolate bars this cocoa goes to make.... It has honestly made me think again before I buy a chocolate bar....

According to that I am in the top 5% yet for this country we are below the poverty line, that doesnt mean we are poor, well I dont think we are, we just arent middle class for this country... I already give to charities helping kids all over the world but I really want to do something more proactive like going and helping build a school or something you know....

What about Habitat for Humanity? It's really easy to get involved with, and they could always use help.

I think, many times, people see things how they want to see it and refuse to believe that although, in the United States, things look bad right now - in third world countries, things are way worse than this all the time.

When I hear people complain about not having brand name clothes or how their SO won't buy them diamonds, I freak out on the inside.

There are people that are dying from not having fresh drinking water.
There are kids that are suffering as they watch their parents starve to death.
There are mothers who are forced to say goodbye to their children because they were raped by the guerrila groups and are now dying from AIDs

Our menial complaints are nothing compared to the real problems seen across this globe.

Yeah watching these docu's really put things into perspective for me, I have never been overly materialistic, but I still crave things I don't need and will sometimes even feel sorry for myslef when I hear about someone buying a new car when we can't even afford to put ours on the road at the moment. It really opened my eyes and I will no longer feel self pitty for what I don't have but will enjoy what I do and make every effort I can to help those that don't....

Andi and I were discussing it last night and once my youngest is of school age (4) I am going to go and help out somewhere either building houses or schools or something. I give to charity but I want to actually DO something, make a physical contribution and actually be able to see first hand the difference being made...

We are very fortunate. It makes me sad to think about what goes on in other countries and this country that people don't know about.
