Combating "unbelief"...

posted 27th Oct
What makes some people think that it is their job, and that it isn't offensive, to try to change someone else's beliefs?

Personally, I do not find it offensive if missionaries or Jehovah's Witnesses or whatever come to my door, because I know why they are there and what they are doing. I do however, find it annoying when people I know, or random people try to change my mind about what I believe. Or even if they question me on my beliefs, really. I think it is none of their business!

I would never in a thousand years try to convert someone to thinking like me (spiritually). I think it is rude!

What do you all think?

Rude, yes.

However, I do think some people mistake questions to satisfy curiosity for something completly different and take it as offensive.

My dental hygeinist was giving me the third degree about if I was christian and what church we went to and were we thinking about going back and she tried to talk me into it while she was cleaning my teeth. Then she said she'd pray for me to come around...

That's the kind of questioning I'm talking about...Not like "Oh, I've never met an agnostic, what do you believe?"

This annoys me so much! My husband is a Christian and I'm not. I believe in God but not organized religion. My husband is also 32, and I'm 26. Any time we talk about our beliefs he gets all condescending and basically says it's because I'm so young and that once I mature I'll "understand" He tries to convince me that his beliefs are right and mine are wrong. He's only like this when we talk about religion! I always point out to him that throughout my life I've been looked down upon andtreated badly by Christiansbecause I don't beleive in Jesus Christ but that I've never been treated poorly by Jews or Muslims because of my beliefs and they don't try to push their beleifs on meeither.

I feel the same way, I dont get why people want to change others to believe like them ,or even care why someone believes the way they do. I think people on here like to talk about it because they just want agrue about something, maybe it makes them feel smarter because they can quote the Bible.

Only 144,000 Jahovah's get into heaven so I don't see why they keep trying to recruit, they're ruining their chances.

It is rude though. DF's mom told me I HAD to believe in god, like I didn't have a choice.

That's just being pushy.

I mean like how C will question you on why you believe that way when in debates.

When non-believers ask legitimate questions, they are sometimes told to 'stop trying to make me not believe' or something equally silly. I've heard it here many times.

I do find it hilarious when people tell atheists to stop pushing their religion on them.

I shut them up by telling them there is no God.

Even if I believed...I'd find some way to shock them into shutting the fuck up.

They think it's okay, because in their heads it's the right thing to do. In her mind she's helping you.  It's annoying I know! Anymore I let it go in one ear and out the other. If it got to the point where it REALLY started bothering me, I'd make up my own wacko schpeel to preach upon.
