Labour story
posted 27th Oct
On October 19th, I went in for an appt even though it was my due date, and the dr. said that I was 1 1/2 cm dilated, about 50% effaced, and a -3 station. She tried stretching it to a 2, but it wasn't working out too well (that hurt!). I was happy to hear that I had made progress since my last appt, but it still wasn't enough, so we scheduled a csection for the 22nd at 9:30 amat Banner Good Samaritan.
Right after my appt, I started to get contractions, but they were very mild and inconsistent so I wasn't worried. I went home and took a nap. When I woke up at about 6:30pm, I felt very nauseated. I went up to go to the bathroom and I noticed that my mucous plug had fallen out. I then started to repack the bags because I knew that with my luck, I'd end up in the hospital because of labour before Thursday. That night I went out with Clinton to the meeting and I noticed that the contractions were back. I went to the bathroom and noticed that I was still bleeding, so I knew for a fact that labour was starting soon.
After the meeting I was sitting outside on a bench talking to my friend Sam, and I kept having contractions. She kept telling me that they were really close, but I wasn't really paying attention and I was in denial. On the way home I still kept having them, and our friend Greg kept asking when I was supposed to go to the hospital and I told him when the contractions are 5 minutes apart and last about 25-45 seconds. He kept telling me the same that Sam was, that they were really close, but I still kept saying no.
When we got home, I took a shower. While in the shower I started to realize that these contractions were pretty close and that I should start timing them. It took me about an hour and a half to finally figure out how to time them because I'm an idiot. By the time that I had 6 slots down, I saw that they were all 4 minutes about and last 45 seconds. At 4 am, I told Clinton to go wake up his mom. When she came downstairs I told her what was happening and she said that I should go to the hospital just to get things checked out.
We arrived at the hospital at about 5 am and checked me, I was still 1 1/2 cm, about 60% effaced, but a -1 station. I knew she dropped because I was constantly going to the bathroom. They put me on a monitor and told me to just basically wait it out for an hour. At 7:30 am, they came in and checked me (by then I was having contractions basically every minute) and I was only 2 cm, 70% effaced, and -1 station. The doctor came in and told me that at 8:30/ 8:45 am, they're going to do a csection.
So they put me on steroids because I was on steroids just the week before due to PUPPP, and they gave me a shot to slow down the contractions. I called my mom and told her what was going on, she was in complete shock because it was so last minute. So at about 8:15 am, they wheeled me into the OR and started doing the prep. I wasn't too happy that I had to do it myself. They put me on the table and gave me the spinal block thing and then laid me down. I felt like I was getting the lethal injection because of the position I was in lol.
After I was laying down the shot thingy started to kick in and I started hypervenilating because of the way it made me feel. I felt extremely nauseated so they put a bedpan next to my face and my blood pressure and heart rate shot up because I wasn't breathing right. They had to put an oxygen tube in my nose to try and get me to breathe. I had the dr. and two nurses trying to calm me down. It took about 5 minutes and then I was able to breathe right. They brought Clinton in and put the sheet up. I could see in the lights what they were doing and it was nasty lol.
It took about 5 minutes to get in there and get her out. Right when I heard the nurse say I was going to feel a lot of pressure, I saw them pull her out in the lights. I immediately started crying. They went and took her to clean her off and I could hear her crying. Clinton was over taking pictures and about 2 minutes later he came and showed me one. My first thought was how big she was.
About 5 minutes later they brought her over and I got to kiss her for the first time. Clinton and I were both crying so hard. She was just staring at him and I couldn't get over the fact of how beautiful she was and how overwhelming it was that I loved her so much.
So on October 20th, 2009 at 9:22 am, Lily Jane Backus was born. She weighed 8 lbs. 4 oz. and 20 1/2 inches long. Right on her daddys birthday :]
