Speech Therapists...If you're out there.

How long does it take to normally diagnose someone with Apraxia of childhood? I just am wondering how long I'm going to be wondering about this...

hard to say, depends on going through private routes vs. public routes, but typically... hmmmm I would say maybe a month or so from first appointment to diagnosis.

Sorry, I'm not 100% sure and of course it would depend on what information you already have they need or if more testing is needed.

Good luck!

It's ok, I just want to know what I'm dealing with. I know he is a sweet boy and will be ok and I'll love him and so will everyone else, kwim? And he's happy, that's what matters most. But I hate waiting to find out what is going on, and I just read that he should have 400+ words and be speaking in 4 or 5 word sentences as a normal thing. He has like 75 words and no sentences

Thanks, he is doing private speech therapy, and also qualifies for birth-3 program as well, I think. It is the private therapist that suggested apraxia.

that's true...And I'm getting the signing dvd's and so are my parents, so basically everyone he is around will learn the same sounds and that should help with frustration and leak down to the twins as well.

How old is your son? My oldest didn't start talking at all until about 2 years old. At that point he kind of had his own language. He knew what he was saying but nobody else could understand him. He used to get so frustrated.
He is 8 now and has some learning disabilities and a few speech issues but other than that he is a happy kid. He was diagnosed at 2.5-3 years old and went to speech therapy for at least a year.

you should talk to Christina (jamil's mama) when her son wouldn't talk they signed so much more to him. He is in speech therapy and is doing amazing. He didnt have the same thing (he is autistic) but the therapy really does work

He is 2.5...He says some words, but other people don't understand him and he has only two sentences, "Mean Mommy" and "Now, Fight!" lovely, right?

He also has a "unique" way of moving his mouth while speaking and he has food issues that I didn't realize were related.

My son didn't say the last letter of almost every word. He was only speaking maybe 5-10 understandable words at 3. It took alot of speech therapy to get him past that. Then they moved him into a preschool class because they thought that would help him. I think it was a mistake on their part because he in now in 2nd grade and still can't say certain words, even if I say them first. For example he says "with" as "wis", he can't say the "th" sound. He also has a hard time saying longer words. He jumbles up the syllables. He is doing better at reading now, but I put him in tutoring for a year to help him. Another thing I notice is that he spells the way he says words instead of trying to sound the word out.
