Does it ever get any easier?

posted 25th Oct
I just have to get this off my chest before I go to bed.

Today I was posting pics of our kids at 3 months old. Their last weights were 7 lbs 11 oz and 8 lbs 4 oz (2 weeks ago). Everyone keeps telling me how big they are and I love hearing it. However, I still see them as they were in NICU, in the incubators, fighting for life. It's like yes I know they are big, but to me they are still my little fighters. I am happy with every gram and every ounce they gain. I just think it hasn't hit me yet that yes we are on the way towards normality. We just go forward from here. Maybe it's because they are still spelling, have monitors, and requiring intervention on our part? I just wish I could stop seeing them as preemies and just as babies. The ironic thing is I never looked at them as preemies in NICU. It has just been since we got home. In NICU I just looked at them as my children, only smaller. I just hate that now, after it's all said and done in NICU, I can't stop looking at them as preemie.

They're so cute =)

It definitely gets easier. I have 2 preemies and rarely does a day go by that I don't think of their humble beginnings, but its easier to think about because I see how healthy and happy and...alive they are. I know it's been a hard road, but appreciate the insight you have. You will always treasure something most mothers take for granted. It's a really special gift and I'm always very thankful for it.

In my honest opinion... Enjoy it.

I look at my sons photos from when he was in NICU and I can't remember any of it, 4 months he fought on and I can't really remember... He's 10 now and I can't connect him as that little baby that fought so hard to stay here with me. I feel terrible for it, like I take him for granted. I'd give anything to be able to connect him to that tiny life that was born way too early. It's like he didn't have a babyhood.

I'm sorry that you feel like that mama. I can promise you it will pass sooner rather than later.

Your babies are incredibly beautiful by the way.

My son was 2 months premature...he's my avvie pic...he's now 7 months old and weighs 20.55lbs (!) but he's still my sicky baby to me and I'm entirely over protective even though there isn't a darn thing wrong with him anymore.

I will try to. Talking to you ladies does help the guilt go away. I felt like the fact that I was looking at them now as preemies was in a way undercutting their achievments. I suppose it is all just part of the process. And ty

Damn. You better watch out. They start scouting them for sports younger and younger every year. They may be camping on your lawn by his first b-day
