Birth Plan

posted 24th Oct
I am in the process of writing my birth plan.. I know things will probably not go as planned but we can try right. :-) I wanted to know if there were other mama's on here willing to post theirs and share some of the things they found important.. and if their doctors and nurses followed their plan as much as possible.

Thanks

Make sure you add things like:

Main management
Right after Birth (baby in your arms or cleaned off first)
IV or None
Rooming in or not

honestly.... i would know YOURSELF and let anyone who is going to be there any specifics about what you want (epi, no epi, shots after the baby is born, etc etc etc) and be clear yourself on what you want to have happen..... then even if you dont want to tell the nurses, someone there with you who knows can....

and leave it at that. birth plans are kinda pointless, IMO. not trying to be insulting.

Well I should of posted this.. there is a possibility that no one will be there at the time so I want it to be written down. I know most of what I want but since this is my first time I want to make sure I did not forget anything.

i would go to the book store and find the 'what to expect pregnancy journal'. at the back of it, it tell s you everything literally that you should put on your birth plan. just sit there in the book store and write it out then put the journal back lol

i took all the classes that were available to take and made a birth plan and had all set for my delivery last year. Then I got gestational diabetes and my birth "plan" became null and void. I went from having a good plan of what I expected and wanted to having a c-section because my son was too big. I think if you have a general idea of what you would like to happen written down then you would be better off that setting your mind to something that you expect to happen and then being disappointed in the long run. I didn't get any of what I wanted. I didn't get the chest on chest .. I didn't get the first breast feeding. I might be a bitter one so this might not be the best advice, but go in to your experience with an open mind and know that at the end of the day ... the outcome you really want is a happy healthy child and mother and you have to give in to whatever is going to make that happen.

If you are going to go vaginal and natural .. be sure that the person that is there to support you knows this. Have a phrase that only the two of you know. Like "i am not kidding now" or "for real real" lol those were mine. just in case i was able to go natural i wanted to not have some nurse pushing epi in my head every time i screamed or cried. like i said .. i didnt get to even try this as my son was taken two weeks early because he was so big, but it was nice to have something as a guideline and although i am slightly bitter about my experience overall the end result was a happy and healthy baby boy and a healthy momma. That is all you can really expect in the end.

They are not pointless in all cases. Even if she just has one for herself to remind herself of what she wanted.

The nurses at our hospital actually read your birth plan and make suggestions to add to it. They follow it as closely as they can. It is really nice.

i really hope youre right. i tried talking to my OB about mine and as soon as i mentioned 'birth plan' she told me to just keep it to myself because nothing ever goes as planned and a birth plan is more for me than for the doctors. i was so mad!!

What you want out of your birth. If you want to stay away from medications, it has other ways for you to manage your pain ect. Do you want the cord to finish pulsating before being cut? Do you not want a paci or bottle given to your baby. It is more then just outlining how your birth is going to go, because most of that, you can not "plan" But you can plan that you do not want the baby to have a bottle or you do not want them to have the newborn shots, ect.

Mine doesnt have much about the "actual birth" more for myself to keep me away from pain meds and what I want after the baby is born. I typed mine out on an above post. The after birth part, is VERY important to me.

I have a FULL out written one. But there is no way in hell the nurses will read it all. So I condensed it. The rest of it, my doula and I will have the long one and we can make decisions upon that aswell.
