She didn't need the caffeine. They weaned her off of it and she was fine. She only had minor apnea episodes and the monitor was enough to get her back on track. If she had an episode the monitor alarmed and it alerted my DH and I that she either was breathing shallow or not breathing at all (if she was sleeping and we weren't watching her - which was never... even when she was sleeping we watched her like a hawk.)

There is a back story to the entire hospital stay, but the main point is that she was 6days old when she started having these episodes. She is 3 yrs old now and never :knock on wood: had another episode since. Thank God. They are scary.

he has only had 3 episodes and he is 5 days old. He starts breathing on his own again after a few seconds .. they said that some babies simply out grow it after a certain point. he is now 37 weeks and a day and hasnt had one in a day so hopefully he has outgrown them

My daughter outgrew hers when she hit her due date. So she had them roughly 2 weeks. She was still sent home with an apnea monitor for more our reassurance that she was doing fine.

Good luck!

My son was put on caffeine for a few weeks to keep his vitals up. They wouldnt let him come home until hecould go without having an episode without caffeine. He was born at 28 weeks though. I think I have heard of some babies going home on caffeine though.

My son was a 32 weeker and he also had apnea. He spent 28 days in the NICU and he came home on caffeine and an Apnea monitor. We stopped giving him the caffeine and 4 months and he was completely off the monitor by 6 months. He just sort of grew out of it. GOod luck mama.

My LO was on caffeine most of the time he was in the NICU. It is very common for Preemies to suffer from sleep apnea. They pretty much go to sleep and forget to breathe fortunately with gaining weight and getting older most grow out of it. The first time I witnessed it I was scared to death. All of a sudden he quit breathing and the alarms went off. I thought oh my god I'm sitting here watching my baby die! The nurse came over, looked at the monitor and starting patting him on the butt and sort of shaking him. Everything went back to normal and she said it's okay he just got to comfortable. We called our nurse over right away and she explained it all to us. Babies can go home on caffeine and monitors, but our hospital would rather them not have to. Sabin was about to go home on it but they couldn't find a company with baby apnea monitors around us so they decided to try the 7 day countdown. If he had no spells during the 7 days then he didn't have to have the caffeine anymore. He did fine and got to come home, but I wound up buying one of those Bebe monitors that detects their breathing with the pad they lay on. It's the only thing that made me feel half way comfortable.

Good luck mama! I know it's scary!

ETA: The caffeine helps keep the brain stimulated even while they sleep so they won't forget to breathe.

well my little one they gave him a 3 day countdown where if he could make it 3 days without one he could go home. He hasnt had one in 3 days and they want to send him home in the morning. He never got started on the caffeine because he only had 3 spells and they didnt even have to assist him. He came out of it on his own. So they said he would prob. just outgrow it. But, even tho the dr. said he is fine to go home tomorrow im freaking out. i dont want to bring him home and have something happen
