Couple's Therapy?

posted 24th Oct
So, we reached our breaking point. It's been coming for some time.

We've decided on going and seeing someone. We want to save this before it becomes insoluble.

Has any of you ever gone to couple's therapy? Any advice or stories would be so appreciated.

I have not personally, but my uncle and my aunt are currently going and its really saving their marriage! My uncle said it was very hard in the beginning, but he said its so worth it.

I've never gone to couple's therapy, but I know people that have. My advice would be to find a therapist that specializes in the type of problem you and your SO are dealing with, ie: cheating, substance abuse, lack of communication, etc. And remember that just because you start out seeing one therapist, it doesn't mean you have to continue to see that one. Make sure you find a therapist both you and your SO are comfortable with and one you feel like is actually helping the two of you. Good luck! I hate seeing people give up on relationships before they exhaust all their options.

i keep being assigned all the marriage counseling at my agency and the only adice i can give is make sure you are honest and willing to do the work. don't bother going if you aren't committed to the counseling and willing to do what the counselor says.

technically you are supposed to go to a marriage counselor (idk if you are married or not) before you get married... so you can see all the "demons come out of the closet" before you get married and are stuck with someone who you THOUGHT you knew but really didn't.

with that being said, my husband and i did 1 day's worth of marriage counseling with my preacher bc we argued ALL the time over EVERYTHING! he came to the conclusion that we just needed to talk to each other nicer when we are having a discussion (like over money, someone wanting to go out without the other, etc)... and we need to let each other finish talking before jumping to conclusions.

he also told me that most people (liks us) don't really need counseling, just someone to tell us what we are doing wrong. he said the people that need counseling are like people who gamble all the rent money away, cheaters, etc...

When I was pregnant I was super bitchy and emotional which lead to a lot of fights with my DH. We went to marriage counseling which turned out to be 1-2 hours of me crying. It was so embarrassing.
I don't think the sessions helped because I was a big emotional pregnant mess but everyones different. You should give it a shot.

We're both very committed. I'm optimistic that this will help us move on together.
