Does your kid have asthma or other respitory issues...

posted 23rd Oct
okay so my 8 year old has some respitory problems and they pretty bad when he gets a cold or a flu so I emailed his doctor and asked if I should start him back on his Qvar inhailer to help keep his lungs strong. He got back to me and says it is a great idea to start him on it now and through the winter months then the virus season is high.

I thought I would make a post for anyone that has a child with asthma or respitory issues this might be something to contact your pedi's about. I believe a strong start is better then nothing.... I do not do flu shots of any sort and this piggy flu has be a little scared for my little man.

Does that go for other inhalers or just that kind. My son takes his flovent for 5 days when he gets a cold or flu and he takes his ventolen on when he's symptomatic during those days. Would that count for those meds? I don't have a pedi here or a doctor I trust (they're all been arogant and dismissive) so I'm kindof relying on my own judgent right now.

my son got super sick a few years back and they put him on it.. he was 6 at the time. It is not a typical inhailer and not used for instant relieve of asthma it is just supose to stragthen the lungs.

No, I dont. Im pretty sure that pulmicort is a steroid as well. We use it more when she starts getting wheezy.

Were getting a new pedi the first of nov. I'l ltalk to them about it. I'm scare bout the piggy thing as well.

No nurse here either, but flovent is a twice a day steroid as well so I wonder if it would the same, hmmm.

My son is on pulmicort and he takes it twice a day every day (he has reactive airway) and then he takes Xopenex on an as needed basis. his pedi told us to actually step his pulmicort up to three times a day as he has a weak immune system and super weak lungs, and she wants him to be safe.

Pulmicort never worked for me for some reason. They tried to switch me from Advair to Pulmicort when I was pregnant but I had to stay on Advair. I used to take Qvar when I would feel a cold coming on as well. It worked really well. I know that when I feel a cold coming, usually I end up beefing up my Advair to 500/50 now instead of getting back on Qvair. Oh the joys of having asthma//allergies.

really?? the advair never worked for my mom... I guess that is why there is options huh? crazy!

Jaden is all kinds of mad at me for making him start of this Qvar.. but the last time he was real sick he was border hitting the hospital for breathing treatments. The only thing that saved us from that happening is we have a nebulizer here.. whew!

I think it depends on what levels you use for the Advair, I tried the first level 50/100 or something like that and it didn't do anything for me. Then when I got to the 250/50 I started to have less attacks. I still have to use my albuterol when I work out but its been a lot less. I tried FloVent and that didn't do anything for me back in the day. In all honesty I use my Advair once a day now and have been fine. Although, I am also getting allergy shots on top of everything. Turned out I didn't have "asthma" so to speak but I was allergic to everything which instead of hayfever or sniffles, it would go directly to my chest. I had no idea I had allergies until a few years ago when I was tested. Go figure.

So you find that the nebulizer does help then when things get rough? I have to take my son in to the hospital on average 4 times a year. His pedi and GP insisted that the nebulizer isn't necessary, that the inhalers with a chamber work just as well. But I insisted on having one and now we only end up at the hospital maybe once a year.

I have not been tested for allergies but I know I have triggers that give me the asthma.

sorry it took me forever... 3 days is shocking for me to not be on gaga.

yeah it for sure helps.. even when he has just a minor cold I use just the saline to help break things up. Good for you for insisting, it has got to be a bit tramatic to have him in that many times a year... not to mention loss of sleep. The er is just nota happy place.

Especially right now, I couldn't see bringing him into the hospital with all the h1n1 people aroundas an asthmatic unless it was truly critical.
