Marriage does it count if it was done by city Hall?

posted 23rd Oct
I was just talking to a friend of mine who was married by the state but kept her maiden name. Right now times are tough and she wants to apply for food stamps but her husband is too proud to accept the help. Because she was married by the state can she put herself down as not married to receive the assistance?

I was also married in city hall but changed my last name to dh's last name does that make me not aloud to do the same? I was also married in a different state than the one I am living in now.

Shouldn't a marriage be considered a marriage no matter what form it was conceived in? Or just as equal to the states or government systems?

um, married is married weather you change your name or not. she has to report his income and that he is living in the house if she wants assistance.

if the marriage was in city hall then it is a legal marriage.
so yes it counts.

I believe if she goes to the food stamp office she can still apply but she needs to have the entire households income stubs.

Um... No, she's married, and it's fraud if she says she isn't on a food stamp application.

She is very legally married.
If she put that she was not married she could get into a lot of trouble.

Even if she didn't change her last name she is still married. City hall, church... where ever. As long as it is done by someone who can legally marry two people, its legal.

Why doesn't she just go by herself? I think all she would need is a pay stub.

She is married, No matter if she changed her last name or not. My best-friend is married and she didn't change her last name, But legally she is married and she got married in the court house too.

So she would have to account for her and her husbands income if she is going to apply for any type of government assistance

it does count. you can put married but just put down your name. not his. you dont have to include your spouses name.

I'm pretty sure that would be fraud if she says she is not married on the application if she is. She needs to report her and her husbands income when applying.

That is what I thought. She is qualified to get them whether she adds her husband or not. Her reasoning was his pride to not accept the help when they need it most.

So she can apply without adding his info and just inform them that she is married
