Has anyone else had a "molar pregnancy"?

posted 23rd Oct
I found out on the 12th that I had miscarried and the doctor told me that she thought it was a molar pregnancy. I had a D&C on the 15th. And yesterday I went back for a follow up appointment and she told me the lab results were back from the D&C and I most definitely had a complete molar pregnancy. She told me that they were rare and dangerous. I have to get bloodwork done once a week to track my hcg levels to make sure they go back to zero which could take a couple months (if everything was removed) And then for 6 months after the reach zero, I have to go once a month for bloodwork to make sure they stay at zero. I had to get chest x-rays to make sure that the "mole" didn't spread into the rest of my body because these moles can be cancerous. I don't know the results yet but I kinda have the mindset that everything bad that can possibly happen is going to happen to me. I mean I already lost my baby. And had to have surgery to remove it. Why not give me cancer? shit. The good thing is they say that they have a pill that can kill the cancer if it is there. And if it doesn't then certain chemotherapy procedures will do the job. . I think the worst part about this is that I can't try to have another baby for a year. And when I do there's a possibility that this could happen again.

I really just wrote this to get other experiences with molar pregnancies from some of you.

the chances of it happening again are VERY rare. i did the bloodwork every wk then month also. had the D&C all that. it is very scary and i was very depressed afterward. but as you can see i am pregnant again and very healthy. it was horrible going every wk though and being reminded of the whole ordeal.

I had a partial molar in Dec 2007.
Found out Apr 2008 that some molar tissue had remained and my uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries were swelling. A couple of weeks later I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer and in May this year I found out that there was a mass on my kidney.

Good luck mama, I hope things go better for you than they did for me. It's rare to have a molar or partial molar pregnancy and just as rare to obtain some kind of cancer from the molar tissue.
My prayers are with you.

So it took them that long to realize that it had remained in your uterus? And apparently the chances are higher if it's a complete molar pregnancy... which is what I've had. I don't know...but I'm too young to have cancer. I'm so sorry that happened to you. Is everything going to be ok? And have you gotten pregnant since the molar?

My blood work always came back normal according to the OB I had.
When my period went completely out of whack though in late March I finally switched OBs. While waiting for my new appointment I had bleeding and cramping so bad I had to go to the hospital. There they found that everything was swollen and said my right ovary looked like a bunch of grapes. Told me to see my OB ASAP for further testing.

He went in, did biopsies on tissue from the uterine muscle and lining, fallopian tubes and both ovaries. He then did a another hCG count on my blood and found that while it was in the normal range (0-5 in non-pregnant women) it was at the higher end of that range (on average, women have 0.5-1 of hCG in their blood at any given time. Mine was 4.7) and said we'd have to wait for the results of the biopsies. I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer just before my daughter's first birthday and started chemo right after I finished moving to California that summer. Chemo halted the growth of the tumor but didn't do anything to kill it and my health quickly started deteriorating because my White Blood Cells were reduced to dangerously low levels.

We were planning on just taking both Ovaries out this past August, but at the end of June I got a positive pregnancy test. I was tense throughout my entire first trimester. I was terrified that the cancerous tissue from my ovary (turned out only my right ovary had malignant masses. My left just has calcified cysts on it) would spread to the baby. So far, so good. I'll be 21 weeks tomorrow and the baby is perfectly healthy and has absolutely no problems so far.

I'm terrified that this is going to happen again when we try again. After the baby is born, will you get your ovaries removed? And then will that be the end to the cancer? Sorry I'm so nosey I just don't have anyone in real life to talk to about this because no one knows what it is.

i had one.. mine was a Complate Molar with co- existing fetus.. i carried my son to 28 weeks which was as far as i could go.. my kind of pregnancy was very rare, not many woman had it... but what i was told was after a molar pregnancy the chance of it happening again was 1- 2 %.,,, my dr told me that if i waiting a couple years that the chances of it happening again was even slimmer than that.. i was on chemo shots for six weeks, my levels went back to normal 4 weeks after i had my son and i got two shots of chemo after that.... it can turn into cancer, but i don't know how often that happens in woman,, . so even after a molar you can have children..... you can't try for a year, but it is worth the wait to make sure it don't happen again.. i can find all of my papers that the hospital gave me and i can give you a little more information about it.. they made sure i knew what was happening to me.. I'm only 21 years old and my son was my first pregnancy.. so far it's been 13 months since my son was born and the "mole" hasn't re-grew, but i have a clot like thing by my bladder where it was.. good luck on everything..

I think that's amazing that you were still able to carry your son. I wish that had been the case for me. Thank you for sharing your story. Your little boy is so cute.

I had a really crummy doctor who couldn't decide if I was going to have a miscarriage or a false pregnancy. She just said you should pass it on your own and that was that. No check ups, nothing. About a month and a half later I started having some troubles and I called a reg OB/GYN. They immediately became concerned and said it sounds like I had a molar pregnancy and told me everything you described. They wanted to check it out right away. Fortunatly that was not the problem. But during this time a lady I know from church told me she had a partial molar and they did the same with her, blood tests and what not and watched her very closely. But it never returned and she has had a baby since then and no problems with the pregnancy. So it doesn't have to be bad, hopefully you won't have a recurrence. And the chances of it happening again are slim.

Did they not make you do blood tests every week to keep track of your hormone level? And how did you get pregnant again so fast? They told me no sex for at least 6 weeks and no getting pregnant for at least a year.

Like I said, crummy doc  No she just said I should pass everything in a couple weeks and that was it. No checking up,no advice,no nothing. And seeing how this was my first I had no clue, obviously. When I got sick for two weeks and had a two week period I called an ob/gyn specialist and they were not impressed with how the other doctor handled it. She told me that it wasn't taken care of properly. That she should have done blood test until my levels went back to 0 to make sure it was all over. So yeah, anyhow thats when I found out I was 2 months pregnant and so far now at 10w2d the baby is still healthy and has a good strong heartbeat. So yeah, weird circumstances. But a happy ending.
