How to cook rice...

posted 22nd Oct
Okay I'm posting this in FAQ cause I didn't want it to be overlooked in the free for all lol

For starters I can't cook rice for the life of me! I have a rice cooker but to be honest I don't want to use it. I want to cook rice on the stove, in a pot.

Sometimes I cook it and it turns out like sticky gloop. I can't effin figure it out! I like to think that I'm a pretty decent little cook, but rice escapes me! I've tried rinsing the rice first, browning the rice. keeping it covered and not messing with it. Sheesh is there some special trick? Oh and what rice do you cook with, brown rice? Jasmine rice? Plain old white rice?

Thanks for your help! I'm gonna make chicken and rice for dinner and for once I don't wanna eff it up! thx in advance

Boil 1 cup water (or however many cups you want)
Add equal amount of rice to water & remove from head & cover.
Let sit 5 min.

Ya I guess I'm leaning more towards mexican rice, where it turns out drier.

Do you want it my way? Here we go, the Egyptian way...

Put enough oil into the pot to cover the bottom of it, add a tablespoon of butter.
(this next part you can leave out if you want)
Take vermicelli pasta, about a handful and put it into the oil, stir until nice and reddish/brown
measure your rice, if you put three cups in, then later you will have to put in four cups of boiling water.
Put rice in with vermicelli and stir for about 2 minutes to make sure all is coated nicely
Put in either well salted boiling water or boiling chicken/beef stock. (one cup more than the rice)
Start to boil then put a lid on it and put it on very low for 6-8 minutes keeping tightly covered.
Taste after that, if it is a little tiny bit undercooked, turn off the heat and keep tightly covered for another 4 minutes or so, it will actually keep cooking itself.
If it is done, then serve

Ooooh this is great! I wanna try it! Question though: do you have to use 5 minute rice or not? I like the sound of this, I like to add garlic and onion to spice it up. Do you doctor yours up?
