Reflux?

posted 20th Oct
My daughter keeps spitting up. First, it was if you laid her down too soon after her bottle with very little burping. Now it's everytime with burping. I brought it up to my doctor at her 2 month appt and she wasn't too worried about it. I'm going to call her doctor in the morning and get her seen but just wondering what you thought. She's on Enfacare (?) 22 (for preemies and low birth weight babies). Is it the formula or reflux or a little of both? She's almost 11 weeks 5 weeks corrected.

Does she act like she is in pain? If she doesn't, then it's most likely not reflux.

Seems to me LOTS of babies have spit issues. Mine did for 3 months, then after that she hardly ever does it. As long as they arn't LOSING weight it shouldn't be a problem. But since she is preemie you shoudl talk to your pedi about it.

If she is acting fine like its not bothering her, try burping her more often during feedings. My son was doing that.. projectile vomiting, but it wasnt bothering him. My pedi said to burp more, so I did.. he hasnt had the problem since.

Actually that isn't true.

My son had mild reflux and he was what is called a "Happy spitter". he never seemed like he was in pain, but spit up a ridiculous amount.

Right, it is still possible for it to be reflux. Just like most babies with reflux spit up a lot, mine was the exception to that rule. She never spit up and still had severe reflux. There will almost always be exceptions with everything, but there are usually general guidelines.

She always sounds like she has a plugged nose which bothers her sleep. The doctor keeps saying it's the "boogies" (her word not mine). She sits up she's fine for the most part. Ever since her 2 month checkup she's been spitting up more. She's spitting up a lot more amount now too. She spits up she can't breathe through her nose as well and she starts crying. I don't know if I would say she's always in pain but some of the time. She can be on your shoulder and you can be burping her and she'll give you like 5 big good burps and she will be looking at you and "talking" and you can still be patting her back and she suddenly spits up without crying. When she was born she was 4lbs 15oz and at her 2 mth check up she was 9lbs 2oz. So I think she's gaining weight just fine. I'm going to call the doctor in the morning and have her check out because some nights she has to sleep with me to be comfortable. I don't want to co sleep especially since I didn't with my son. Plus, it's going to be hard if he wakes up in the middle of the night. I want to be able to get up with them and not worry about one in my bed. I'd be too afraid something happening to her if I co sleep. She likes sleeping on someone's chest the best.

Does she arch her back while eating? Kick and scream while eating? Does she have projectile vomitting? Those were the main signs that my Pedi told me to look out for and my daughter did have them. She has/had a severe case of it(she is starting to outgrow it for the most part). It could be reflux, but then again she could just be one of those babies who spit up a lot. Preemies have a high percentage of getting AR.

She's pretty calm while eating sometimes she'll get wiggly but that's it. One or two times it might be projectile vomiting but most of the time it's just spit up. I'm wondering if I should wait til her 4 month check up in December and see if it clears itself up. She sleeps longer when she's sitting up.

I would get her checked out ASAP, you don't want her to be in pain. I know if I missed a dose of her meds(my DH did, one time) and she was miserable. There are some test they can run to see if it is reflux or not.

She has bad gas. We have to give her gas meds during the day and when she gets wiggly while feeding her it's usually a sign for us that she's full or needs to burp. I'm just confused.

If she has bad gas it could be the milk she is on. If she still has it after you give her the meds, try a diff. brand. Have you tried Gripe Water?Teagan has bad gas, I have tried all the gas meds and she still has it. I'm sure(and the Pedi) that it is the formula, but there is only 2 formulas that are for milk allergy babies, so there isn't much we can do

I forgot about the gripe water. I'll try that, if that don't work I'll bring her in to get checked out.

does she get rice cereal in her formula? My son was on rice cereal with his formula since i brought him home. When he was around your daughters age he use to have bad acid reflux also. With the rice cereal his formula wasn't coming up that much with it but if you didn't burp him a couple times he will spit up alot. There was nights i had to get up out of bed he had bad gas and i didn't get there on time he would spit up alot or i would find formula on his sheet. i would still take her to the pedi to find out a way to keep the formula down. My son is 8 months now 6 months adjusted and is starting to grow out of it once in a blue he will spit up alot and he doesn't spit up in his sleep anymore.
