pregnant, mother of preemie

posted 20th Oct
I am soo worried about having another baby premature.. I was wondering if the doctor would do more ultrasounds, especially around 25 and 28 weeks to see how your cervix is doing? The cause is unknown... I am seeing a regular OB, as there are no high-risk pregnancy doctors around here that I'm aware of.

Those who had a first preemie birth, did you go full term with your second? or does it really just vary?

I read that if you had a preemie birth caused from incompetent cervix your Dr will monitor you more closely next time, you need to let them know if its a different doctor though. Its it was from incompetent cervix then they usually do a clercage(sp?) around 12 weeks or so to prevent it.

If she was born at 31 weeks 6 days could it have been a incompetent cervix?

Usually incompetant cervix happens earlier like before 20 weeks. You may want to ask your doctor I know they monitor you more closely and you get more ultrasounds to check everything. They may put you on bedrest for the next one.

I am pregnant with our 2nd baby after our first was a preemie. I am only 6wks along but so far I have been in twice for blood, have had an us already and am scheduled for another one this monday(10-26). My preterm labor cause was unknown, so far all I know is that I am on progesterne pills (ugh, nasty pills), and they are keeping a closer eye on me.
You definetly need to talk to your OB, tell them your concerns and issues. Make sure you write them down before you go so you don't forget them. When is your next dr's appt?

After my first preemie, I had ultrasounds every 2 weeks with my second pregnancy. I still delivered early but not everyone does.

And incompetent cervix does not just happen before 20 weeks. It can happen throughout pregnancy depending on how severe the problem is. Treatment for it (a cerclage) does need to happen before 20 weeks though.

Aw Thanks!.. Did you have a regular OB doctor? Do you think I should ask him if I'm going to get U/S's every 2 weeks to make sure everything is going good?

No, I saw a perinatologist. My regular OB is wonderful but she wouldn't see my 'high risk' pregnancy. If you can't see a peri, your regular OB definitely needs to be taking extra precautions like regular ultrasounds. My ultrasounds rotated, so first ultrasound I would have a growth ultrasound to check the baby, my fluids and the placenta. Then 2 weeks later I would have a vaginal ultrasound to check my cervical length.

Progesterone pills this early are to prevent miscarriage - which happens for different reasons than premature labor. Your status doesn't show it, have you had other miscarriages?

Not that I know of. I will be asking my OB about extra Ultrasounds, I thought about that in the first place.. if he doesn't go for it , I'll switch. Thanks though!

Good luck! What happened with your last pregnancy? Did you have something like pre-e? Or did you start contracting? Or did your water break?

Started Contracting early (I didn't know it) My boyfriend dumped me then a week later I found out I was 3cm dilated at 29 weeks.. lasted until I had Haley at 31 weeks 6 days on bedrest and Terabutaline. So I don't know if it was from the "stress" of the breakup, or if it was going to happen anyway. I don't know if my cervix started giving out or if it was from all the stress BH contractions I got.

It sounds like stress probably played a large part in it. I'm sorry you had to go through that =(

My advice is this...

Take everything seriously. Be the annoying pregnant lady that calls for every issue and non issue possible. You never know when something that seems like no big deal could be a sign that something worse is coming. DRINK WATER. Drink water like it's going out of style. Really. Take it easy. I don't know how old your first is, so I'm sure that will be hard at times, but make sure you make time to just...rest. And try not to stress about the things you can't control. Easier said than done, I know. And demand the best care possible. Make your doctor's office know you by name if you have to. Don't let them ignore you. And again, best of luck. One preemie is hard. Two preemies just really sucks =(
