Extended rear facing..

posted 15th Oct
can someone give me all the info about this please?
I'd like my son to rear face as long as its safe. But isn't it not safe after the weight limit on my carseat? (rear facing weight limit is less than front facing weight limit)

Yes you have to go by what your car seat says for a rear facing. I think mine is about 35lb after that I will turn him

I think mine is 35 too.. So what if he's over a year but not 35lbs yet? I can still have him rear facing without getting a ticket?

Yes he can face backwards if he is 2 and under 35lb. I think it is a good thing to do.

Mine is 35lbs rearfacing as well and John is nowhere near that at almost 19 months if that makes you feel better.
We are currently trying to find one with a higher RF weight limit so we can extend longer.

My son is 19 months (omg, today! lol) and still rear facing. His car seat rear faces until 35 lbs as well, he is only 25 lbs so I figure we'll make it to two years and then I'll turn him around (when he hits 35 lbs).

yes you don't have to turn him at a year.
It's actually recomended to have them RF as long as thy havn't hit the weight limit. My LO is 20.5 months, about 33-ish lbs an still RF, the weight limit on his is 35lb and we are getting a new one that goes to 40lbs RF (highest I have found)

John is 28lbs currently and 31 1/2 inches.
He has long leggies and is still super comfortable rearfacing. He kind of sits with them "froggy" style.

Lol aww that is cute !
Cadyn is so short, so I know he's going to have a ton of leg room still, lol.
But he's chunkyy, hahah.

Here are links and videos of the benefits of extended rear facing. The American Pediatrics Association also now say child should remain rear facing to the limits on the convertible car seat.

By law a child must be rear facing to at least 1 year and 20 lbs, but this does not mean you MUST turn them at that time.

Most people are concerned about their child's legs being scrunched or broken in a crash. There is absolutely no evidence that shows a child's legs are in danger and I would much rather deal with a broken leg, than a broken neck.

In Sweden the children rear face until 4-5 years old by law. Some other places also do. They have the lowest rate of children deaths in car crashes. The us has the highest rate.

I hope all this info helps if you have any questions please ask me.

Here is rear facing photos of children at all different ages.

All the safety experts say it's safest for a child to rear face as their spine is not strong enough to protect the spinal cord if they are forward facing. It's not strong enough because the vertebrae are in pieces joined by cartilage. The vertebral arch has not fused into a complete circle of bone, which will enclose and protect the spinal cord

In the first picture there is a cervical vertebrae for a one-year old (left), and beside it a cervical vertebrae for a 6 year old (right). Note that the 1-yr old's vertebrae is still in pieces.

In the 2nd picture, thoracic vertebrae for a 1 yr old (left) and for a 6 yr old (right). Note that the 1-yr old's vertebrae is still in pieces.

" />

In the 3rd picture, lumbar vertebrae for a 1 yr old (left) and for a 6 yr old (right). Note that the 1-yr old's vertebrae is still in pieces.

Here is a video. It is a true story and here is the little boys website. http://www.joelsjourney.org/

And now on to videos. They look like the same videos until you turn them on. They have some of the same pictures and for some reason all show the same pictures but watch them all. Crash tests of rear and forward facing and also a few on reasons to rear face longer with quotes from car safety and other experts. On the rear facing dummy you will see what looks like tape holding the head but that is something that if it breaks the child as went to far and the car seat fails the test and must be looked at and they need to find out why it broke.
