Smoking in the house

posted 13th Oct
I am staying with my mother and step father at the moment and will be when the baby arrives because I have no where else to go right now until I have the baby and get back on my feet, find a job etc., but anyway I am worried because they both smoke in the house and I hate It but cant really say too much because I am living under there roof, I talked to my mom about it and she came up with the idea of getting an air purifier and said she would not smoke in the house but my step father is not gonna stop because he smokes alot and he is just not gonna stop but yea I was wondering how much the air purifier would help? or is there anything else I can do?

an air purrifier isnt going to take everything away. I say the only things is smoking outside.

tell them that second hand smoke is linked to SIDS. that's what i said to my mom, and now she only smokes in her room or outside.

I think an air purifier would be better then nothing right?

Also open doors and windows when capable. No smoking in the room the baby sleeps, and no one holding or touching the baby until they have changed after smoking. The dr reccomended if we smoked that we put special shirts in the coa closet and wear them and take them off after smoking so the baby could be held. I just made my husband quit though. My son would cough his brains out when DH held him even though he only smoked at work.

I think the biggest thing about smoking in the house is, it highers the levels of carbon monoxide. Which is not good, for anyone. I would def. purchase a carbon monoxide detector for the home and keep it where you and the baby will sleep.

That is pretty selfish of them, honestly. Why is it so hard NOT to smoke in the house with the baby and you???

I was in the same situation when I had my daughter. We were staying with my FIL and he smokes A LOT! He refused to quit smoking in the house, but he agreed to smoke in his bedroom only. We had purifiers in his room and my daughters room that ran constantly. I hated the fact that he wouldn't quit smoking in the house for the sake of his grandchild, BUT it was his house.   . My daughter has turned out fine so I guess it was okay!

I would suggest opening doors and windows, and maybe see if he can smoke in his room, or you can just go in your room when he's smoking.

It can't hurt. Tell your mom about me. My folks smoked 24/7 in the house. I got sick ALL the time. It took me a good 5 years of living w/out that daily intake of crap for me to get healthy. There were several nights I'd wake up coughing up blood(not tons and I always went to the dr.) . It was all thanks to the lovely lung infections i'd frequently get from the crap in my lungs. My husband nearly drove me to the ER quite a few times too. It scared him. Yeah, Yeah "my house, my rules" but they have to think of that baby too.

The best thing I can tell you is to ask them not to smoke around the baby, keep an air purifier in whatever room the baby is in, and open windows and doors if possible.

I grew up in a household of 7 smokers... it never bothered me aside from the fact that my clothing smelled like smoke. But my sister wasn't so lucky and had allergies really bad due to it and stuff. But an air purifier and having them not smoke around the baby at all is better than nothing.
